Why blame yourself when you can blame some blockhead for designing such an inconsistent and unreliable product? If golf clubs were cars they'd always be in the shop

I love the look of the JPX 800 Pro. Can't imagine ditching my MX 100s, but if I did I would take a real hard look at the JPX's.

I think most GI iron sets come with a SW you can buy that is of the same line. I know my iron set has a 55 SW available. Would be a special order if course. Here is an example of one from one that lines up with your hybrids.... http://www.globalgolf.com/product/go...a3os.aspx?gd=3

I don't think club head size has anything to do with it. It's all in the shaft and the loft of the club. Hitting a 9 stiff shaft Callaway would be freakin impossible for me because my swing speed is around 90 and the thing would be a knuckleball from me (little to no spin to get a workable flight path). I would seriously consider starting with a crazy high lofted driver and work your way down until you find your fit. It is the spin you generate off the club face that dictates the general flight path of your ball. Read this article...seriously...it was an eye opener for me. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m.../ai_109467575/ I have been driving 1000% better after grabbing a cheapo Tour Edge 16 degree Geomax. 260 straight as an arrow 9 of 10 shots. 260 from a 16 degree driver!? My ball flights are no higher than my Nike 10.5...it's all in the spin I guess! Edit...I am usually 250s, saw I typed 260s.

If I don't fall into the "always" category I back off. Hard lesson learned. This in no way guarantees a good result, I simply demand of myself a plan and a plan to execute my plan Must have hit hundreds of shots with a blank or scattered mind before I finally figured out there is no point in hitting unless I am ready. My driver does this to me more than anything. Notice it is garaged for the season.

Sounds like you hit and liked the 10.5. Go for it. No "what ifs" if you buy the one that is a proven fit for you, right?

How to practice with your Long irons and Hybrids?
mcgriff replied to bkoguy07's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
When I first got my hybrids I was topping all of them. I remember thinking to myself "Man, I just blew hundreds on this new iron set!" Once I got over the visuals of a hybrid and started hitting down on them like I would any other iron things fell in to place. I was hitting a more sweep shot like you describe. Thing is, most hybrids are the same length as its corresponding iron (in most cases, not all). So, I was taking my 3 wood swing at the things, thus my tops. Here's what did it for me. I picked the target flag 100 yards out...pretended I had a wedge in my hand and took a nice easy swing intending to drop the ball on the flag. Results have been solid since then. -
balls ... whatever .....
mcgriff replied to Gerald's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Bought 96 Mojos for $64 off the bay. That'll cover me for quite awhile. More than anything I believe it is important to hit the SAME ball type to become familiar with how they behave. The Mojos may not be the best ball out there, but they seem durable, economic, and pretty consistent. I will take that over oscillating between 3 different ball types and giving shots away because one ball tends to check up quicker than another....or drop 5 yards shorter or longer than another. I have enough on my mind on the course without worrying about losing $2-3 balls every other hole -
Once I ran out to a new to me course trying to get a quick 9 in. Was alone as my normal playing partners were at work. I tee off on 1, make a double. I wasn't too happy with myself as I get to the next tee. I check the yardage on the next hole, say to myself "This yardage seems off, doesn't seem to be 430 yards,". Oh well, new course for me right? Tee it up, make a par and move on to the next tee....which was the 10th tee. Got 2 free holes that day I guess.

Years ago in a league I was in my partner and I wound up playing for the championship. I think I was a 4 and he was a 9 (9 hole HC). Anyway, we were up against the 2 scratch golfer team and we had them against the ropes all day. We get to the final hole 1 up. My partner does his job with a bogey to kill his scratch's par. Up to me to do my job. I wasn't getting anything on the hole so all I really needed was a par on the easiest hole out there. Well, my opponent bogeyed and I 4 putted my way to a triple to lose the championship. That is #1 for sure...actually, that covers 1 through 7!

I am with you, Gerald. My standard 8 slot drives me nutso. I have a 14 divider bag, but it weighs a ton. I will have to check out the bags recommended here.

I try to think of the shot as a really long chip. I try to pick a landing area as my target based on how far I think the ball will run. For me, it is more of a loft choice. If I want to run it farther I may hit my 4H. If I want a shorter run with a higher trajectory I may hit the 8I. It's all feel IMO. Since your ball will be interacting with the turf a lot more than a regular shot at the pin I don't think there is a tried and true method to nailing down distance.

This game can be so frustrating
mcgriff replied to mcintoshmc's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I hear ya. Had a few extra hours late morning today so I went to the range and got an XL bucket. Talk about madness. It felt like day one all over again. I was freakin slicing my gap wedge it was so bad. Nothing I did could correct the results. My strikes were all over the club face, my divots were fat or invisible, thought my 3 wood was going to make rain I was launching it so high. But, having been here before I know that's the way it is. Some days you just have to forget about. Try not to go mental and keep things simple. -
I haven't found an easy to hit 1H yet. Not saying one doesn't exist, I just haven't found it. I think Cleveland makes a 1H. I hit some older ones and the results weren't great...same with a Nickent. If my wood is misbehaving I take my medicine and take a shorter shot with my 17. I am with you though. If I ever find a reliable 1H I will be all over it.

Take my bag from 15 clubs to 14.
mcgriff replied to xxsoultonesxx's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I hit the Sumo2 3H and it pretty much does everything a 5 wood does. Goes about 215 give or take and has a pretty consistent trajectory. I would say the Nike or the Cobra has to go. -
My Bullseye can double as a lefty club and has done so more than once. How's THAT for versatility! Yes, she has a couple bruises from tree roots. So long as she sits still in my hands and meets the ball true she'll always be around.

Yup hit everything, stress about what to buy, then buy the MX-100s. They should come in at half your budget and I challenge anyone to find a GI set that is as solid as the MX-100s. You will be light on the long end as the set starts at a 4 hybrid...that's what the other half of your budget is for. For a longer hybrid take a peek at the Ping G15...pretty close to the 4h and 5h in the Mizuno set. Fill in from there. I strongly recommend adding at least 1 wedge with the aggressive grooves (any 2010 model form whoever you wish) before the 2011 wedges replace the good stuff. Again, I prefer the Mizunos in the wedge department. Yes, Cleveland, Vokey, and Mizuno wedges will eat $100 a pop, but they are worth every single penny....seriously. What sets the MX-100s apart from, say an Adams set or a Ping set is the feedback they give. I believe it is critical for any golfer to feel what a fat, thin, hook, slice, etc. shot feels like when it is hit. It's like an electric fence for a dog..."Ouch, don't do that again." Every other set I hit was dull no matter how I hit them. Not sure how you can improve unless your sticks are talking back to you. Gear DOES matter. There is a reason we all aren't hitting Tommy Armour Silver Scots or ancient Titleist DCIs. Buying some old piece of crap iron set may do nothing at all for you. A modern GI set of clubs will most definitely increase your enjoyment for the game. Have fun in your search for the right set up. I see NO reason to go old school for your next set of clubs.

I like my irons and they are tops for forgiveness. I chose them when I chose to throw my ego away and get stuff that works. They are in my sig..Mizuno MX-100s. All depends on your budget as well. Adams A3OS sets can be found for good prices. Tell us what you want to spend.

45 50 56 for me. Yes, fewer choices work great for me. A 56 wedge has always been in my bag and it really is my go to club for anything 80 yards in. Real tight lies near the green call out the 50 for its low bounce. I LOVE the MP T10s btw. If I ever made a change it would be to add a 52 or 54 and make it 53. 85-95 yard shots can be a bit of a hunt for me as my 50 likes to go go go. I could hit my 56 farther, sure. But, I like a nice "feel" swing at about 75% strength for shooting at the pin. My irons are so strong I consider myself carrying 2 wedges, 50 and 56.

I'm in no way judging anyone, but why spend an arm and a leg on a putter? I have been using my Bullseye putt putt golf style putter for 17 years. I hit some of the spaceship looking putters in the store the other day and I don't get it. Putting is the one stroke that is 99.999% player and .001% gear. Clue me in on what I am missing because I can't get my mind around dropping hundreds on a putter. Sorry if I went off topic.
-
I do it 15 minutes a day and so should you! If your kitchen floor is too bumpy for putting, try the concrete basement floor. Nothing will improve your feel for the putter than trying to control distance on what equates to a sheet of ice. Do this and I guarantee you will improve your green play.

When the problem's not the swing...

Splitting hairs here I think. I believe he is trying to burn the importance of repeatability into your head. -
Wow... Taylor Made Hybrids > Cleveland
mcgriff replied to eprobation's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I would love to try some TM's. Used their woods all through the 90s. My Nike's have been snipers, not sure why. Maybe Christmas time will be kind to my game this year. -
I totally agree with regular flex shafts for us common folk. A great many people would benefit from a slower swing speed with better tempo and timing.

56 seems to be just right for my needs. I carried a 60 for years and the thing stayed clean as a whistle season after season. I am of the mind to master one club for anything under 75 yards. 56 does it for me even thought I am constantly tempted to add another wedge. If I have a super tight lie I will chip with the 50 gap. Only time I am screwed is when I have a super tight lie with no room to work. I'd love to flop, but my limited practice time is better spent on more common shots.
