I know there have been other discussions on this forum about that people should drop to add a hybrid or a wedge. I'm wondering if I should drop my 18* hybrid to add a 60* wedge. I'm long off the tee (280-300) and don't find myself using the hybrid very much any more. I hit the hybrid around 230 and my 3 iron around 225, so I was thinking of dropping the hybrid, getting a high lofted 3 wood and adding a 60* wedge. Any thoughts on if this should work and/or what wedge to get?

Thanks

For 5 yards you should take it out sure, but instead of playing a 53 56 60 combo, why not go 54 58. The 60 can be difficult on full shots. Also you might consider getting your hybrid reshafted, if you're only hitting it 230 it might be ballooning, you could also fill that spot with a 5 wood. Or put in a 2 iron. There are a lot of possibilities, its part of the fun.

Why not just drop the 3 iron? That's what I did. Checkout my signature spot, I am playing 4-PW, with a hybrid and 3 wood, then that's how I have a 60 in there.

I carry a full bag of wedges so I'm going to vote for the wedge, with a number of wedges I can create a good mix of lofts and bounces to help me out in a number of situations in different conditions. The loft could come in handy whereas you mentioned you have length and find yourself wasting a stick with the hybrid. Both have their advantages so the best bet, if you have the resources, is to buy the wedge and try rounds out with and without the hybrid

Here's another vote for the 60* wedge. I carry 4 wedges and am willing to sacrifice a little distance on my par 5 second shots for the extra confidence those wedges give me from about 110 yds. in. I'm only able to carry a driver and one fairway wood (usually a 3W) but that's O.K. I use my 60* wedge a lot. My accuracy isn't the greatest so I end up with a lot of shots where I would have been putting for birdie if I'd have hit it straight. Instead, it might be pin high, just the other side of the greenside bunker. That lob wedge has saved my bacon a bunch of times in situations like that. I can lob it over the bunker and stop near the hole for a one putt (that's the plan, anyway). There's one par 3 hole I play a lot where if you slice your drive the slightest little bit you end up at the bottom of this hill that's so steep they built a stairway so you don't bust your butt trying to get down the hill to hit your second shot. When you get down there you're hitting back up to a tiny little green. The hill's so steep you can't even see the flag from down there. I'm getting a lot of practice hitting that lob wedge over that hill. Even a SW would be too much club from down there. You'll make it over the hill but fly the green on the other side. Of course, you're probably a better golfer than me but I'll bet you still find a lot of uses for a 60*.

I was thinking of ditching the hybrid, trading for a Mizuno 16.5* 4 wood and adding a 60* wedge. I find myself hitting the hybrid once a round at most, and that is usually off the tee on a short par 4. The switch will probably have to wait until next season anyway, as I've already burnt my entire year's budget on my irons and driver.

I have 6*s between my wedges:

48* PW (Carry it 135yards)
54* SW (bent from a 56) (Carry it 120yards)
60* LW (Carry it 95yards with a 3/4 swing for proper control)

So, I have a bit of a gap between my SW and LW, but I simply fill that with a nice solid 3/4 swing from the SW. I rountinely practice this gap shot, so, for me, it works well and I use my 2iron a lot into par 5s a lot and on windy days, so I'd rather not add a fourth wedge.

To each their own though. I can tell you, a 60*requires a lot of practice, probably more on full shots than simple and typical flip shots that you would perform with your exist wedges.

I am seriously considering looking at a custom lob wedge to replace my rapidly depleting Callaway wedge. Scratchgolf ( http://www.scratchgolf.com ) is a very tempting proposition you might want to consider.

The problem I've had is that my PW is a 46*, so I've had to put in a 52* and take out a FW.

It depends a lot on the golf courses you play, some courses don't bring up the need for a 60* very often, others do, especially if they have huge bunkers around the green, elevated greens, or plateau fairways.

It´s not having the wedges, it´s using them properly.
Most of the Tour players only carry two : PW/54/58 or PW/56/60... but they know how to use them...
I do carry a PW 46º GW 50º SW 54º LW 58º combo, and a 4W 17º off the tee and fairway....
Don´t get caught in the 14 clubs trap, and practice, practice, practice....
