Hello all I've been playing for a while now and I've had the golf bug. Now that its off season here I'm looking for advice. Now I've been putting money on the side for a big golf purchase. Now orignally I was saving for new irons seeing that the irons I have were handed down to me by my grandfather. I play okay with them but also feel limited with them. Now I have no 3 Wood and I was looking into getting rid of my 7 Wood and purchasing a 3 and 5 Wood. If you had $300 and were looking for new tools to practice with so that once the weather turned around you were ready to go what would you do?

I have a brand new TaylorMade 5 Wood Burner RH that I have purchased two months ago. Here's the link to the pics. I am not allowed to post on the market place yet because I am new. Let me know if you are interested.

When I play I track the following to see where I need to improve my game

- fairways hit
- greens on regulations
- putts per round

- up and down from around the green to within 100 yards

If you see the summary of your overall game it will become clear what golf equipment you need to assist you to improve that statistic.

i suggest u get a 3wood first. if you can hit the 7wood, you might as well keep it because they are very useful from the fairway, and can be more accurate than a 5wood off the deck. if i were you, i'd go for maybe a 4wood and combine the 2clubs(3w and 5w) to save money. you might be able to find a nice set of used irons for $200 or so that can help you alot. if money is tight look at the used section of your local shop for the best deals.

$300 will buy a lot of good stuff. Based on what you say, but knowing nothing of your game, it sounds like a new set of irons might be your most pressing need (and there may be money left after that for other needs/wants).

Just as example, here is the iron sets on sale at RockBottomGolf.com (a reputable site), with several good sets ranging in price from about $130 - $450. The Bridgestone GC OS set is a good deal ($190). Of course you can find lots of sets on eBay new or used for great prices as well. (One set that has gotten good reviews that should be available for new at good price is Wilson Staff Ci6 - they were Golf Digest's Hot List winner in 2007 I believe). It's probably also a good idea to either look at iron sets that include 1-2 hybrids or purchase a hybrid or two to replace longer irons.

I agree with Pkapp. Irons man! Take a look at last years Cobra FP's. Should be right around your price range and those are great for the money.

Thanx everyone for the advice. I believe I'm in a bigger need of irons then a new wood judging from my game. Now if I can get help on websites to buy from I might be in business.

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
