What's going on golfers?!

I'm in the market for a gps unit and doing quite a bit of research on the plethora of manufacturers. I was all set on Skycaddie's SG5 or at the least, the 2.5 but read horrible reviews of folks experiencing difficulty with their customer service.

Did some reading on Garmin's Golf Logix and found out that Garmin's coming out with their latest and greatest "G5" with a touchscreen and layout of the hole.

Site: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=261&pID;=31070#

Then a new unit similar to Garmin's G5 called "Onpar".

Site: http://www.onpargps.com/

Like any other electronic gadget - it keeps evolving. What unit out there gives you the best/better value? And a quality unit or mfg that I can "trust"?

Do I need a color screen? No. But would be nice.
Layout of the hole would be nice.
And lastly, not only a unit to give me distance from the fairway - but from the adjacent fairway as well.

Thanks for your suggestions!
E

For the most part, Sky Caddie is still the best because of how they have mapped out the courses. Every course in their system has been mapped by on course 'mappers'. None of the other companies can make that claim, at least not yet. Because of the way it's mapped it tends to be more accurate than the others and often has more 'custom points' mapped as well because many of these points are much easier to see on course than they are from satellite images, which is how most other companies map the courses.

I like the screens better on many of the other units (such as uPro and the one's you have shown), but I'm more interested in custom point mapping and accurate distances (at least as accurate as GPS can be). I personally have the iGolf NEO, but I purchased it primarily for cost and size reasons. I am very happy with it, but there are times when I'm playing with a buddy with Sky Caddie that he has info I do not have.

As is the case with any techology, if you wait something better will come along, but that rule always applies so you'd be waiting for ever. Best bet is to buy what you like now and worry about technology improvements later. Some of the biggest things to be thinking about are 'membership costs', 'are your courses available on that companies system' and 'can you make custom points/changes to the courses'?

You know, I'd just be a little leery of a company that messes up something as simple as the "front, middle, back" yardages on the display ad. Lack of attention to detail there makes me wonder about the manufacturing process...... Maybe it's just me......

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Good input PiKapp - thank you for your insight. *looking up uPro*

And good catch Dave! The pic was snagged from a company that makes the holster/accessory piece for the Onpar unit.

    • Day 133 (25 Apr 24) - Worked with the Divot Board today added a piece of cardboad behind the ball to help reinforce ball first contact. Contact improved through the round.   Added grandson's football goal posts about 10yds out to add a good start line visual Good session today.
    • Day 120: 4/25/24 Full Speed Spectrum training session. Low energy today and my speed was lower than normal. Will see what I can do on Saturday.
    • Day 541, April 25, 2024 Ten minutes after lessons. Still not caught up, but should be by tomorrow evening.
    • Playing irons only may lead to some short-term gains, but you'll want to at least practice with the driver if you ultimately have some decently good goals.
    • He plays from 68.3 / 124.  A combo tee setup of normal mens and seniors.   I play from 69.7/127.   He left after taking a triple on 14 and then leaving.  Which plays to what I think his plan is,   He doesn’t stroke on 14 but would have to take bogey for non completed holes on the way in.   Maybe that’s giving him too much credit, but he found a way to add 4 shots to his score over three holes so….     I looked up his last 20 rounds in GHIN and he has a lot of rounds at easier courses (rating and slope) that are higher than his normal rounds at home.   Since I mostly have his front nine score during the match (36) to go on, he has three nine hole scores at our course posted that are 41-43. I wrote the whole thing up to the head of our golf association who runs all the tournaments.  Our pro is not involved officially in the tournaments because the golf associations are separate from the club.   He’s pretty well known for this, however I was pretty shocked at how well he played carrying a 15.   I think eventually they will do something, a lot of people have complained.  The golf association threw someone out a couple of years ago and it was a three month situation where the guy retaliated.  They probably are hesitant to go thru anything like that again.  That is a rather crazy story I might post about later.
