Hitting top of iron face

Something nasty has crept into my swing over the winter months. I put some impact tape on my irons and noticed I've started hitting the face on the top part. This is causing chunking and inconsistent contact.

My guess is it could be related to two things. One would be my swing is bottoming out earlier than I think and my ball is too far in the front of my stance. Second would be I'm not shifting my weight forward. I don't believe it's the latter.

Any suggestions?

It could be either one of them, but i think you really have narrowed it down. I have a tendency sometimes to hit high on the irons out of the rough...which leads to a shorther shot.

Maybe take 1/2 to 3/4 swings on the practice range and ingrain good ball contact, then step it up to 90% full swings, works for me.

The rough is the rough...hard to figure out.

The odd thing is I'm hitting my woods and 3-5 hybrid really well. It's just my irons that are killing me.

Then work those clubs, hit what you are comfortable with. My 20 degree Cobra Baffler is hands down my favorite club, I have just about worn out the face on the practice range, I can nail it off the tee, use it around the green, hit stingers, low fades, high fades, low draws, (working on the high draw)...etc...

there is no rule in golf that you have to hit your 9 iron 140, your 8..150, etc....

Pretty is as Pretty does.

Maybe build your game around your favorite club?

I would think if you're chunking everything the ball is too far back in your stance? Wouldn't too far forward cause thin shots? Maybe thats just me.

I've always heard, true or not, that hitting high on the face is due to hitting down on the ball too much, i.e. coming in too steep and/or having the ball too far back in your stance.

Hitting high on the face out of the rough is a different thing. That happens more than you would think on the PGA even. The ball sits up more in the rough than the player thinks. They then sole the club below the ball and a dead shot comes off the top of the face.

But if you are hitting high of the face from the fairway, I can't imagine how that would be from a too shallow swing.

      I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

      If you walk up to a food/drink kiosk at Magic Kingdom and ask the person for a cup of "magic water" they will give you a small cup of Sprite for free. About 3 fingers worth. They don't sell alcohol at MK anymore so I go over to one of the courses while she hangs out there.
