Any Adams Tom Watson wedge players out there?

I have a quick question. How does the groove size compare to the top of the range of wedges like Vokeys and Clevelands? Are they the same size, or are they narrow and shallow like the cheaper wedges around? I'm thinking of getting a set of the Adams wedges but none of the stores around here have any in stock so can't check them out myself.

The grooves are the same as any of the top quality wedges. I spin them as well as any of the big name wedges. I like the shape and grind on them too.

I have 3 different sets of the Watson wedges from the 2006 chrome wedges, a set of Watson gunmetal wedges and a set of the 2007 Watson satin wedges. I love the 2007 satin finish wedges and those have been in my bag for over a year.

I have hit almost all the "big name" wedges and still prefer the Adams Watson wedges. About the only thing I don't like about Adams clubs is the grips they put on them -- IMO opinion they use cheap grips. First thing I do when I get them is to change to Tour Velvet grips and all is well.

I like the Vokeys and TM RAC TP satin wedges but the Watson wedges are a bargain that flies under the radar.

Thanks, that's good to hear. They do seem like a pretty good bargain for the price.

I'd completely disagree. Grooves are much smaller on my watson wedges than on my tm Z TP wedge. I spin the ball noticibly more with the z tp on short chips. On full shots there's no comparison between the two. The Z TP wins out.

I don't know why so many people complain about the grips. Yes they smell funky when new, but I feel the generic shaft is the problem with these wedges. I completely agree about the shape/grind. I really like the way they look cosmetically.

If I could do it again, I would save the $90 I spent on the set of 3 and buy one Z TP custom fit to me for $99. I've found that personally, I'm happy with just one or two wedges.

Two things to note:

1) Not sure if its still going on, but I've read somewhere that theres some sale going on for the 3 wedge set for $50 of an older model. And about $80 for a different model. For $50, I think there is no need to even hesitate. You won't regret buying them.

2) My Z TP is custom length/lie and it's entirely possible some problems I had with the watsons were just becase they were too small for a tall guy like me.

In the end it IS a solid wedge, but like I said, imo, it's not close to the Z TP i've been playing. If you made a ratio of price/performance... I'm thinking the watsons would win that contest however.

Had great luck with the 52 and 56 gunmetals, have carried them for about 3 seasons or so now. I don't carry a 60, so mine is pristine. The wedges look good, and spin as well as any I have owned.

I use the Adams Tom Watson PVD wedges that I bought on rockbottomgolf.com. I find them just fine for my game. They don't give me the maximum spin but for the price I can't complain. I prefer my friend's Cleveland wedges but that will be in the future. Love the lob wedge, gotten rather pretty good at flop shots with it.

Just ordered a set of the PVD wedges off Rock Bottom Golf. It's actually cheaper to get them shipped over from the US than to buy them locally so now I just have to wait untill they get here!

    • He plays from 68.3 / 124.  A combo tee setup of normal mens and seniors.   I play from 69.7/127.   He left after taking a triple on 14 and then leaving.  Which plays to what I think his plan is,   He doesn’t stroke on 14 but would have to take bogey for non completed holes on the way in.   Maybe that’s giving him too much credit, but he found a way to add 4 shots to his score over three holes so….     I looked up his last 20 rounds in GHIN and he has a lot of rounds at easier courses (rating and slope) that are higher than his normal rounds at home.   Since I mostly have his front nine score during the match (36) to go on, he has three nine hole scores at our course posted that are 41-43. I wrote the whole thing up to the head of our golf association who runs all the tournaments.  Our pro is not involved officially in the tournaments because the golf associations are separate from the club.   He’s pretty well known for this, however I was pretty shocked at how well he played carrying a 15.   I think eventually they will do something, a lot of people have complained.  The golf association threw someone out a couple of years ago and it was a three month situation where the guy retaliated.  They probably are hesitant to go thru anything like that again.  That is a rather crazy story I might post about later.
