Our first event was brutal – there is no other way to put it. The forecast called for some early light rain, followed by a little bit of afternoon sun and clouds. As of noon, we had a light rain – the course had some puddles, but the fairways were fairly decent and the greens were rolling OK. Instead of getting warmer and the rain letting up, temps dropped and the rain picked up ever so slightly every hour. Four hours later, our small puddles of water turned into LAKES. Temps dropped and you could almost see your breath by 3pm – hands got freezing cold, everything was wet (even the towels), and it hurt to just hit the ball. A few of us only lasted 9, with a few more going 15, and the very first group somehow finished out (big respect for Sky, Charles, and James). I’m sure I made a ton of mistakes, but it was our first event, so it was a good learning experience. Since many scorecards were illegible and damaged, this will be an exhibition.

We had a courageous 9 players show up, which is miraculous considering the weather.

Myself

Doug won the long drive with his best hit of the day at 11, he bombed it 275 yards, all carry, no roll.
James won closest to the pin at 12 feet on hole 13.

Thank you all,

Jason

The Poor Man’s Golf Tour is primed for a excellent second event at Tenison Glen on the 21st. The weather is warming up, the grass is getting a little greener, and it’s time to kick into high gear. We’re always looking for people that like to have a good time, understand and respect the basic rules of golf, and want to improve their game to the next level – scratch to 30 handicaps are more than welcome.

March 21st, Tenison Glen

Please PM or email to sign up by Monday night. I’ll be booking tee the final tee times first thing Tuesday morning. If you’d like to be paired with someone specific, mention that too – I will do my best to accommodate.

Green fees are only $14, with carts cost $13 for the loop, and range balls are $4-$7 depending on the bucket. The first group will go off at 2pm – check-in will be held from 1-1:30pm. Depending on the size of the event (16 or more), we might be required to ride, but the course management seems really supportive and maybe able to flex with us (for those that want to walk) as long as we keep up our pace of play.

Thousands of Dallasites, from beginners to aspiring tour professionals like Lee Trevino, have developed their passion for golf on these tree lined fairways. White Rock Creek winds through this attractive layout, making ball placement a necessity. Golfers of all ability levels will enjoy a relaxing yet challenging 18 holes on this familiar classic. Tenison Glen was host to the USGA 1968 Public Links Championship.”

Tomorrow's event has been cancelled, email has been sent. The forecast calls for 35 degrees, with rain, snow, and high winds. Next event is in 2 weeks at Twin WElls.

Thanks,

Something we should do for sure, but if we are looking for a better name then perhaps we should hold until that happens.

Twin Wells is coming up this Sunday, April 4th - shoot me a PM no later than tomorrow morning to play.

Richard and I played our practice round yesterday – the wind was howling, but the conditions are decent for this time of year. The grass is starting to grow in on the fairways, the greens are in decent shape, and the course is drying out nicely from all the rain/snow. Each of us had a couple of wind-aided drives well over 300 yards, so the fairways are definitely driver-friendly.

Yes, I know it’s Easter weekend - when I set the schedule, I was more worried about working around The Masters, The Open, and the TPC. If you can get permission, come on out. Since it will be a small field, we'll be going off at 3pm, which will hopefully help some of you sneak off in the afternoon.

Weekend Report

OK, first a report from the weekend. We ended up with 5 brave souls who were able to sneak away on Easter – Truett, Doug, Andrew, Gummi, and myself. Since we were literally one of maybe five groups on the golf course, we played as a 5-some. Finishing the last 2 holes in the dark just to get in, it became more of a casual round as a few gimmies were passed around to get off the course before 9pm, LOL. While everybody hit some incredible shots, it’s still early in the year and scoring was between 90-115 for the group. Andrew won closest to the pin on a 190 yard par 3, perfectly stroking his hybrid to a very close 12 feet. Gummi won the longest drive hole in the dark with a nice 250 yard poke in the fairway, straight as an arrow. Truett hit an amazing flop shot to 10 feet on the 10th hole, coming from 15 feet below the green. Doug hit a 5 iron on the 190 yard 17th to within 20 feet, nice draw that checked up just past the hole. I somehow found a way to birdie two holes, my first two of the year.

Stevens Park – April 18th

Our next event is being held at Steven’s Park, the Sunday after next, at 2pm on April 18th. I just spoke with the staff this morning and they are looking forward to having us out. Additionally, they mentioned the remodeling that will start in December of this year – the course is being completely revamped and will be closed for an entire year. The course is getting in better shape every day, the greens are rolling true, and we should actually have some grass in the fairway for this event.

Newbies

For those that haven’t come out yet because you are worried that you haven’t played much, or maybe you don’t know every rule – don’t sweat the small stuff. I don’t know all the rules, but I keep a rule book in my bag and there are others in your group that are there to help. Everybody is not playing to their potential right now – it’s early in the season, and as you can tell from the first few events, there is no reason to be ashamed of a high score. Come out and enjoy the experience, meet the guys, and let’s get the season going. Remember, you get points for every event you play and we are working on trophies/gifts for end of the season. Additionally, the only cost is the twilight green fee and normal playing fees – the kitty is only $8 and it’s completely voluntary. Something you missed this weekend – Doug asked Truett if he was going drop his pants after coming short of the ladies tees on a topped drive. Apparently he hadn’t heard that one before, because the look on his face was priceless. (For the record, the PMGT does not support dropping your pants on the golf course).

I hope to see all of you on the 18th. I’ll send out the email for sign-ups on Friday.

If you ever come to big D, shoot me a PM, we play every Sunday, regardless of whether or not there is an event.

It’s time to get this party started – the crappy weather is over (fingers crossed) and course conditions are getting better every day. The management at Stevens Park is looking forward to having us out, the green fees are cheap, and the course is short. This is a great opportunity for scoring and a good warm-up for our first major coming in just a few weeks. If you have any friends or fellow golfers you’d like added to the email list, just let me know. April 18th – Stevens Park Please PM or email to sign up by Monday night. I’ll be booking tee the final tee times first thing Tuesday morning. If you’d like to be paired with someone specific, mention that too – I will do my best to accommodate. Green fees are only $14, with a cart for the loop coming in at $13. The first groups will be going off at 2pm – check-in will be held from 1-1:30pm. We have our tee times set for this weekend on Sunday. We have 8 people signed up for this weekend – I’ve also booked an extra tee time for 4 more spots for late entries, please PM or email no later than Friday. I will be checking in players from 1-1:30pm in the lounge area. Green/cart fees should be paid to the golf course at 1:45 (Since 2pm is the start of twilight, they try to take money no earlier than they have to for audit purposes). For those that have never been there before, they do not have a range – for those that want to hit balls, you can utilize your home course beforehand or go to Twin Wells range, which is only about 10 minutes away. Stevens Park does have a large putting green, as well as a chipping area.

When you complete your round, return to the lounge to turn in your score cards at the tourney table. If I am still out on course, feel free to put up your clubs, grab a beer, and relax. I’d like a couple of minutes to get your card and hear about your round.

After our luck with the elements, the Poor Man’s Golf Tour should really be changed to the Bad Weather Tour, or maybe the Iron Man Golf Tour. Every event has been riddled with some type of challenge, but the show always goes on. Fortunately for us, the conditions were much better than that of LB Houston – the fairways were saturated (no real standing water) and the temps were in the high 50’s by the end of the day. There was a nice drizzle all day long, but no real rain. We had a couple of new people show up – Kevin and Ryan F joined our group of weekend warriors. Truett, Richard, and Sky also braved the weather so we put a couple of 3-somes on the course (Sky had to leave early). Somehow, we finally managed to finish a round and post some scores. If any of you have scores or stats you’d like posted from previous rounds, locate them and I’ll be glad to add the info to our new spreadsheet.

Next Event – Cedar Crest, our first Major, is coming up on May 2nd – Doug plays here regularly and says this course is in excellent shape. I’m playing a practice round this upcoming Sunday at 2pm – if you’d like to join in, let me know by tomorrow morning (Richard is already in). Still trying to work out some type of trophy for the event winner. Remember, everyone is eligible to play in this event.

Highlights – Ryan won the closest to the pin contest with a knock to 25 feet, while also leading everyone in GIR. Truett made a 40 footer for birdie on the second hole, as well as a 50+ footer from off the green on another hole to save bogey. Kevin sank a nice, breaking 15 footer for birdie, as well as a bladed chip that hit the pin at light speed and somehow fell in the hole. Richard said his 9-iron was dialed in all day, with a perfect ball flight and pure strikes – he also tagged a perfect drive on 6, leaving just a 9-iron into the green. Although Sky only got in a few holes before he had to leave, he had a nice birdie – he and I also tied for longest drive with a couple of 260 yard pipes into the wind and drizzle on the 5th hole. Putting was really tough all day, so kudos to those that made anything – the sand and water were brutal on the greens. With the wet fairways, there was no roll at all, and the temps required a lot more club to get to each hole.

Results – As you notice, since we are still short handicaps, 2 points are the standard, as well as for anyone that has played in an event so far. Also, I’ll try a little copy and paste as well:

Hope you can make it out soon.....so far, it's been 30-45 minute drive for me to all the events.....there are a few on the schedule closer to home, but others that are an hour away....

As we go west, green fees seem to rise, and it also seems they are less likely to allow walkers on Sunday......if you know of any courses that direction that are in the $20-$30 2pm greenfee range on Sundays where we can walk that I may have left out, shoot me a PM or email.....locations are subject to change, so we can always make room for good/cheap courses I should have done a better job of rotating direction of courses on the original scheduel, but live and learn....

It doesn't have anything to do with the courses you've chosen...I just live that far north. Iron Horse and Riverchase are the two closest tournament venues for me and they are still 45 minutes. The closest courses to where I live that are worth playing are Winstar, Robson Ranch, WestRidge, and Fossil Creek. With the exception of Robson Ranch, they are also all about 30 minutes away.

Winstar is in Oklahoma, but it does offer a casino for those interested. It is also $43 with cart and I don't know if they discount walkers or not. Robson Ranch is on 35W in south Denton. I don't know their rates because their website kinda sucks, but it is a pretty decent course. You probably don't want to walk it though. WestRidge's rates on Sunday are 11:00 - 2:59 for $49.00 and after 3:00 $29.00. Both of these include carts and I don't know if they would allow walking. Fossil Creek is probably my favorite course, but it's $49 and I don't know about walking and walking cost. There are closer courses to me, but with the exception of Timberlinks I think they are bad courses (TWU and Lake Park come to mind) or private. Timberlinks is a 9 hole track in Denton. Walking 18 is $19.50 and cart is $29.50. It is a narrow and challenging course. It was just really wet the time I played there because they use reclaimed water from the nearby dump.
