Does anybody else do that? Today, I was at the range (REAL nice day in Northern New Jersey) and after the first 50 balls or so... I got tired (noodle arms from gripping the club too tightly) so I took a break for a drink and when I came back, I decided to simulate a round on the range using the distances and layouts for the course I'll be playing in about three weeks.

I'd (attempt to) play a draw for a dogleg left... a fade for a dogleg right... and straight for, obviously, a straight hole. I'd use the approximate yardage I hit the ball and subtract from the scorecard... and then I'd create a 'fairway' using landmarks. If I didn't reach the green, I'd chip to a specific target the approximate distance a real chip would be from. When I reached the 'green'... I'd add two strokes (for putts) to my final score (I average about 36 putts per round).

I played the front nine fairly well... ending at 8 over par. The back nine was a bit tougher on me and I ended up with an 11 over par inward nine for a 19 over par 91 score (net 65).

I find it keeps me involved in my practice session. I know it's not as realistic as playing (range mats don't have rough, perfectly level lie, etc)... but, it gave me a good idea of what clubs I'd be looking at hitting from what distances on each hole.

Anybody else... ?

I started doing it because we would have to play 3 or 4 holes on the range for our high school team. Now when I practice, I try to incorporate it because it forces you to play different shots to different targets. I practice before I do it just like you did.

I try to do this at the range once I've gone through my clubs to warm up. Mostly I'll just make up a hole in my head then go driver > iron > iron/chip/lob etc. If I hit a terrible drive left or right ill take out the 3iron and hit a low shot as if I'm hitting from behind trees or in the woods. It's quite fun and makes the range time more enjoyable. I should bring a scorecard and play a real course next time instead of making things up in my head.

I'm heading to the range tonight to have a swing before my game on Friday but don't want to completely kill myself - I think I might take the course planner with me tonight and have a dry run. Great idea!
