I did a quick Mizuno 'Swing DNA' Shaft fitting at local golf shop today, and was a bit suprised at the results of shaft recommendations (Irons) and comment made by the 'fitter' - not sure how knowledgeable he was actually. Would like to hear from any clubfitters on the forum or anyone that knows the 'internals'/logic of how the Mizuno software make recommendations, or where I can find detailed explanation of how to interpret.

First the Results from 3 Swings and the Shaft recommendations.... (the club was unmarked, maybe a 6 or 7 Iron length/loft

Swing 1: MPH 79 Tempo: 8 Toe Down: 2 Kick Angle: 5 Release Factor 5
Swing 2: MPH 78 Tempo: 5 Toe Down: 3 Kick Angle: 5 Release Factor: 7
Swing 3: MPH 80 Tempo: 8 Toe Down: 3 Kick Angle: 6 Release Factor:6

Shaft Recommendations from Mizuno Software:
1. Dyanmic Gold S-300 (130g)
2. Project X 5.5 (115g)
3. KBS Stiff (120g).

fyi: Swing 3 felt like best swing to me. I fly my 6 Iron about 155 and tend to hit the ball high (I believe I have a steep angle of attack); I hit the ball fairly straight; my bad shots are pulls and pull fade/slice - I tend to aim right and have grooved an over the top move that I control fairly consistently (~9 hdcp, have been briefly as low as a 5 within last few years); 53 yrs old. Currently play R7XD Irons with stock TaylorMade R shafts which I think are lighter and lower flex point than DG and definitely more flexible..... I think I probably do need a bit stiffer shaft.

I saw on the computer graph that I 'rated' at the very top of "R/S" shaft range(They actually had an R range area, an R/S (tweener) an S, SX, X, etc................

Comments from the 'fitter' when I expressed surprise on the DG S300 recommnedation since this is a realtively heavy shaft with a high flex point.."You have an early release (which is true I think and is a power leak for me), so they are recommending a heavier shaft to encourage later release".
Does that make sense to you guys? If so, will I likely have trouble squaring the clubface at impact with this shaft.

Also a little surprised that it recommended the S shaft rather than some sort of trimming to firm up the DG R-300 a bit.

Anyway, I know there are a lot of knowledgeable folks on this forum, so any input is welcome. I'm going to do it again before I purchase anything.... looking into those MX-300's.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Could also be related to your tempo numbers. I have similar speeds but much slower tempo reading (3), so regulars were recommended for me exclusively.

I agree with kevink2. I have just tried the same Mizuno fitting device, with the exact same swing speed as you, but much slover tempo (3-4) and got the DG R300 and and Rifle PX5.0 recommended.

snowman -

I received the exact same 3 recommendations. Which were in that order as well if that means anything.

I am not sure of any of my numbers though except for SS - and that was 2 swings at 86 and 1 at 87. I thought I would be between a S and X but I wasn't.

If I am not mistaking I don't believe the first recommendation (DG S300) is the best, the device just gives 3 options that would work well. I would say you probably need to hit all 3 on the range or course to see what they do.

I also believe the DG S300 will launch the lowest, PX5.5 low to mid, and KBS w/ mid launch.

Seeing how you received the same suggestions I am definitely going to follow this post as I am shopping irons as well.

I wonder if the DG was recommended due to your high ball flight, in an effort to flatten the trajectory a little? Also, a heavier shaft can help guide the club a little more on plane, as long as it's not too heavy. So that could potentially help reduce the over the top move.

Admittedly, I don't really know much about the new Mizuno fitting system. Looks/sounds like it's relatively similar to the True Temper ShaftLab system though?

A few weeks ago I sat in on the Optimizer Fitting Demo with Chicago's Mizuno Rep. He walked us through the fitting concept and showed us the way the Optimizer and software work. Its great for fitters (I was certified Titleist and HG when I was a professional) because shaft flex and characteristics is purely subjective. Using this new tool and software has taken the guesswork out of the equation. The three options that the program provides is just that, options. The idea is to eliminate one of the shaft profiles (based on your trajectory tendencies so a low kick point shaft would in your case be eliminated which would be the DG S300 for its low kick point) and then try out the other two shafts (X 5.5 mid-low kick point and KBS mid kick point). The main reason you were placed in the Stiffer shaft was due to your quick tempo #8 which is at the upper end of their tempo range. If your tempo was more like swing #2, you would have been more in the Regular Flex range.

Now you are correct in that there is an option for soft stepping or hard stepping, but the software program will alert the fitter when and if there is a "tweener". I'm going to get more instruction on Saturday (I'm going to do Tech Rep work at Demo days part-time) and I will input your data into the system to see what comes up. So I will post more on Saturday night.

The tempo kicked you up.

My tempo score was also consistently 8, and my 6-iron swing speed was 88-90, and it put me into X-flex. I had never played X shafts before, but I do now and it has made a huge difference.
