Hey all,

My friend is flying to NY next week and I asked him to bring me back golf clubs set. I would appreciate it if you could help me select a proper set.

I just started playing two months ago but I'm persistent and trying to practice every day. I'm right handed, 29 and have a slightly below average height (1.7 meters = 5.57742782 feet).

The stores that my friend can visit are:

Golfsmith Retail

http://www.golfsmith.com/retail_store.php?store_number=070

New York Golf Center

http://www.nygolfcenter.com/

The World of Golf

http://www.theworldofgolf.com/

I would like to spend no more then 500$.

Thank you very much!

Rotem,

I don't believe I'm experienced enough to suggest a golf club set; however, I have a similar problem in regards to the height issue. I have posted a similar thread here: http://thesandtrap.com/t/55976/recommendation-for-a-first-club-set-for-a-height-challenged-player and the general opinion seems to be that it is best to get fitted for clubs. I believe I'm going to get a set of beginner clubs once I have been properly fitted, even though both of our budget is low ($500).

Regardless, I'll save up some more money in order to be able to have a set of properly fitted clubs as this is a long term investment (3 years or more).

Regards,

Dan

Hey Dan,

Since I Live in Israel, I don't have anywhere to buy golf clubs not to mention fitted ones. All I can do is to buy online or to tell me friend to buy my in NY.

I would still appreciate if someone can suggest me proper golf clubs set.

Thank you.

I began (in 1960!) with five clubs--a 4-wood, a 5-iron, an 8-iron, a sand wedge, and a putter.   On those occasions when I feel like walking, I still get by fine with just those five.

Taylormade RocketBallz.....13° tour spoon;  Ping G15.....17° fairway wood;  Callaway RAZR X Blk.....24° fairway wood;

Epon AF-901....19° driving iron;  Wishon 870Ti....5-8 irons (1° weak), 9-iron (2° weak); Nakashima SuperSpin.....52, 58, 64° wedges;

Lovett Tour Standard.....sand iron; Louisville HB.....putter.

Well thank you for your response Aging Boomer, but how does this helps me exactly? I still don't know which brand to buy ...

That's the thing.  You're buying 5 or 6 individual clubs, not a set.  The brand doesn't matter. Check the odd club bins at the shops and pick up what you like.  You won't know what you really need until you play a little bit and maybe take a couple of lessons.  If you don't want to spring for private lessons, which run into a little dough, group lessons are quite cheap and will get you started just fine.  Check the papers and bulletin boerds, or ask you friends.  I'm sure there are newspapers, bulletin boards, and friends in Isreal!

If there are places to play, there are places to buy odd clubs, perhaps previously owned.  If you buy online based on somebody else's opinion, you could end up with anything.

Check out Tour Edge.com. Tour Edge has great quality clubs and offer a life time warranty. They have complete sets for just over $400 and they are a very good brand name. I just purchased the HP 11 senior set and they are great.:-D

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
