Hey guys,  new to the forum and just wanted to see if i could get some advice.  I have played golf probably about 10 times my entire life (age 28) before this year and decided to pick it up and try to have fun with it.  I shot a couple 100s the first couple times out and spent some time on the range and kept playing and my last 4 rounds have all been under 90 with an 83 thrown in there last weekend. I am currently hitting the NIKE PRO Cavity irons and was thinking about switching to something like the Ping G15 or G20s or been seeing good things about the Mizuno JPX800s also...i like my irons but it seems the misses are felt and i know i dont have a great swing yet, it feels different everytime i play but was thinking that maybe those G15 or G20s would be a little better club for me...

Thanks!

Hi CUgrad2010,

Welcome to TST.  You're going to love it here.

For whatever it is worth, here is my 2¢.

If you are going to be a serious consumer of the game, your best bet would be to have a professional fitting and hit several different name brand clubs (Ping, Mizuno, Nike, Titleist, TaylorMade, etc.) before you make a decision.

If you are going to be a casual golfer, and don't want to spend a lot on clubs, I would go to an suction website like eBay and purchase a set that is a few years old. By buying a set a couple of years old, you would be saving a couple of hundred dollars for basically the same technology.  The deals are excellent, so that if you do not like the clubs you buy, you can try to resell them and get a different set. Now, which set would you buy? See what brand of club your favorite golfer is playing, then research online the different models that are prior to the current one.

Thanks for the reply!  Yea i mean i want to get into it but i also have alot of other things going on so realistically i cannot afford to really go to the range but a couple times a week, and have been playing about a round a week.  I am very happy with the progress but just heard ALOT of good things about the Ping G15/G20 irons and just feel like i should give them a try.  I got a heck of a deal on my Nike VR cavities and i like them alot they are in great shape, just from what i read and gather they may not be anything near the Pings or even the X series from Callaway.  Just curious if anyone had experience with both.

I actually am going this week to hit with a former pro and like i said i am consistently around 87-88 having never gotten pointers frmo people that know what they are talking about...honestly i thought about investing in a net and mat for the back yard just to be able to swing every day.  I feel like that is where my game struggles just being so inconsistent...i can shoot an 83 and be in a groove then go out and the same exact shots i hit the day before chunk or blade and my swing feels completely different and end up with a 95.

And my favorite would prob be D Johnson or Rory which is why i decided to be decked out in Nike HAHAH  but in all seriousness i was just curious if the G series would be that much better than the Nike VR Pro Cavities i have.  The "mishits" just seem to be ALOT worse than what i have read for the G series from Ping...

Also just throwing this out there that i think it kind of weird...i lost my 7 iron at a range one weekend so i went on Ebay and found a heck of a deal on a brand new Nike VR 7 iron but it was the VR forged not pro cavity...they look very similar but for some reason i hit that iron way better than the cavities...isnt that backwards??

anyone hit the G15s or G20s for a comparison on the Nikes?

I played the Nike Covert irons and thought they were very good. I play Ping i3+ irons regularly and have seen the G15's & G20's. I prefer Ping, but I don't think that you can go wrong with most name brands.

I would probably try playing the brand name of my favorite golfer. Then research different mid-priced models.

When you find something, pull the trigger and don't look back.

Here is my recommendation for brand name and models.

- Ping, G15 or G20

- Titleist, AP1

- TaylorMade - Burner or Burner Plus

- Nike - Pro Cavity or Covert

- Callaway - X2 Hot or Razr X

- Cobra - Amp

Drivers: Bag 1 - TM R11 (10.5°); Bag 2 - Ping G5 (9°),
Fairway woods: #1 - TM RBZ Tour (14.5°) & TM System 2 Raylor (17°); #2 - TM Burner (15°) & TM V-Steel (18°)
Hybrid: #1 - TM Rocketballz (19°); #2 - Ping G5 (19°)
Irons: #1 - Ping i3+; #2 - Hogan Edge  (both 4-pw, +1" shaft)
Wedges: #1 - Ping i3+ U wedge (52°) & Ping Eye 2+ BeCu (60°); #2 - Ping ISI Sand BeCu (52°) & Cleveland CG11 lob (60°)

Golf Balls: Titleist Pro V1, Bridgestone B330, Callaway SR1, Slazenger Grips: Lamkin Crossline
Golf Shoes: Footjoy & Adidas; Golf Glove: Footjoy StaSof®; Golf Bag: Ping Hoofer
I love this game! :-D

Thanks! Yea I mean I guess Nike would be the coolest brand but I don't care about that as long as I am confident in my irons....I think I am going to try to sale or trade my Pro Cavities and get the G15s... everything I read seems to be pointing to that being one of the best GI irons made even with the newer stuff...may even throw some cash and go after some G20s but not sure there was much difference in them from what I have read...if I'm not happy I can always sell the Pings and go back to the nikes

    • Day 549, May 4, 2024 After lessons and working with Natalie, hit some balls for awhile. Just backswing stuff. Forgot about the slightly shorter stuff, though I'm sure it was as they were only about 75% speed with brief pauses.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
