What do y’all think is the greatest round in professional golf? My personal favorite is Arnold Palmer’s final round in the 1960 US Open. Here’s how I heard the story: he was something like six shots behind, sitting at 215 after the third round, and was talking with his friend in the lunchroom. His friend said he was way too far behind to have a shot at winning. Then Arnie said, “If I drive the first green, make birdie, and shoot 65 today for a 280 total, will that be enough to win? Doesn’t 280 always win the US Open?” He then drove the first green, and made birdie there, along with many holes on the front side. His final score: 65. For a 280 total. And, as he predicted, he won the US Open. What I think is so cool about that is the fact that he said he was gonna shoot 65 before he actually played. I believe Arnie was the greatest player of his time.
