Anyone played the new Cleveland wedges with the Zip Grooves? I like playing really soft balls (ala Callaway Hex Tour 56) and was wondering if these new grooves trash balls like this more than other wedges.

I don't play the Cleveland Zip wedges but I've cut the Callaway 56 balls pretty deeply with my Titleist spin milled wedges. In one incident a pure wedge resulted in four deep groove cuts in the ball and enough spin to bring the ball up a tier on the green.

My solution: I switched balls

I thoroughly enjoy the feel of Hex tour 56 and do not want to switch balls. This is not the route I want to take to solve this problem. Has anyone played these wedges? If so please post your opinion of them and how they effect balls.

I just bought the CG 12 and have noticed that it does shave the ball like I shave in the morning. They are rather sharp grooves. But to the point of destroying balls, I think not. Maybe a bit more wear. Jay

I know the Clev wedges are well thought of..but I play Mizunos and use a Bridgestone 330 ball, and regularly I have to peel off pieces of the ball that have been cut from the grooves, like hanging chads from a Florida ballot...softer balls must be even worse.

Funny that you say that about the chads. As in an earlier post it was asked are most golfers republican or something to that effect. That being the case I am a Republican with a Democrat Wedge????????????? JaY

my dad uses callaway hx 56's and cleveland cg12 wedges. it seems to me that he goes through balls faster than i do, and we hit an equal number of balls into the ponds each round.(unfortunatly) however, he does get more spin, and that keeps him happy. so keep on using the balls you like as long as you dont mind buying one extra sleeve (of 3) a month.

how long does it normally take to break in a wedge to the point where it won't cut up a ball like it would brand new? i just got a spin milled vokey (54.10) and i don't want to play any soft ball if it is just going to be cut up with every full shot i take.

    • Day 18: 2026.01.20 Continuing work on arm raise during backswing. Starting to feel less weird, especially the slower I go. Looking like a busy week so might be the weekend before I can hit some balls.
    • It’s possible the graphite shaft has a small internal crack or a delamination. Tapping it and hearing a vibrating sound is usually a sign the shaft isn’t behaving as it should. Since the store wasn’t helpful, consider taking it to a club fitter or a pro shop that can check the shaft flex and integrity. If it’s defective, you might be able to get a replacement from the manufacturer.
    • It’s interesting how much a 3D system changes your understanding. Observing top players in full detail and realizing the trail knee shouldn’t fully extend is a great example of why being open to new info is so important. I like your approach: not trying to be “right,” but trying to teach correctly based on actual evidence. Makes sense why golfers would benefit from this perspective.
    • I would say both are equally not the best for golf. Is it better than nothing, sure.  Golf is an athletic motion. Professional golfers are doing a comprehensive workout routine focusing on strength, power, flexibility, stability. They might include some yoga into the routine. I would put both of them in the recovery bin, not golf enhancement bin.  If you want to increase swing speed, core strength, longevity in golf and life, then lift heavy weights.
