Changing clubs, opinions needed

Hello all and welcome to the 2008 season!!
I am currently playing Ping G2 iros, black dot std. length. Love the clubs, won't trade them for all the tea in China. I just bought a set of MacGregor MacTec M685 forged irons. I did the stupid thing by not hitting them first, but the price was unbeatable ($215, with s&h;, BRAND NEW with graphite stiff shafts) I am currently around a 15-17hdcp. I guess the question is, will I hurt my game with these clubs since I am used to the offset that the Pings have, and how big is the learning curve between a cast and a forged, very little offset club? I probably will not bring them on a course until mid season, I do want to get to the range and see how hard (or easy) they are to hit.

Those macTecs are great clubs man. You didnt do anything wrong by swithching sets. If anything I think you will play better. The mactecs are very forgiving and long just like the driver magregor makes. If i were you if you are having problems with the clubs--change the grips--sometimes the feel of the grips make the irons 20 times better

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

When i went in to a golf town i tried out the taylormade r7 and the taylormade r7 forged irons. A forged iron is a hell of a lot harder to hit. I am not the best player in the world so i had to work harder to get crisp, clean contact with the ball all the time. I did not hit the ball as far with the forged clubs. A cast club is a lot easier to hit than a forged club. In the August 2007 issue of Golf Digest they did a what's in my bag segment with Paul Casey and he said, "I like the classic look of these Nike Forged Blades. You can't beat the feedback of a blade, but if i didn't play so much i wouldn't use them."

Whats in my bag:
Driver: r7 Superquad 9.5 with stiff ProForce V2 75g
Wood: r7 Steel 4 wood stiff stock shaft
Hybrid: 3DX ironwood 3 with stiff Aldila NV Hybrid shaft
Irons: r7 with Project X 6.0 +1"Wedges: 52, 56, 60 spin milledPutter: Rossa Corzina

It's funny that you mentioned that, I just installed Lamkin Dual Density torsion control grips on my Pings and wedges! And yes, it does make a difference. I have bigger hands, so "stock" grips tend to be a bit small for me. I just used 3 wraps of tape on each club, and what a difference new grips make.

Yea thats fantastic. I did the same for my wedges and now i chip everything really crisp. I mean golf is all about feel and like i say---It always starts with the actual grip of the club. Its not the club or the shaft its the grip

      Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.

      As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
