The Golf Channel Amateur Tour that is....

This is my first year on it and the last time I played actual competitive golf was in 1993. I am pretty excited just to get out there and have my scores really mean something. Anyways, just thought I would throw this out there....

For $200 I'm not. This will be as sandbagged as the old Oldsmobile Scramble.

Ok, cool. I guess $200 is not that much $ to me.

I will also be in one of the top two tiers so I am not worried about sandbagging.....lol

That ought to work sort of well if you get in the 0-3.9 index bracket.

There won't be any +2s masquerading as 3s.

That is true, but I think I will be in the one below that at the start. I haven't played much in the last 3 years so I need to knock the rust off.

Does the GC Amateur tour have people in your region... it seems like they have a pretty poor turnout in a lot of areas.

This tour does much better... and is better priced...

Whoops... I see now that you are in Colorado, so the tour I mentioned will do you no good.

Well I live in Colorado and the egolf tour doesn't have a region here. I am pretty sure there is a good turnout in this area. I guess I will see, I will also let you know.

It's $200 to join and $180 per tournament in NY/Westchester. In order to compete Nationwide, you have to committ to six tournaments. That's $1400 for six golf tournaments at courses where I could play 70 times for that amount of money.

Does anyone know how much prize money they are offering? Is it just a trophy and some bragging rights?

Hmmm...tournaments are about $120 here on courses that cost $60-$150..... You can play national tournaments, but to goto the Championships you must play a certain amount of tournaments in your local region. Money isn't an issue for me, I want to have fun and competition. Since it is an amatuer tour you cannot accept money, but can receive prizes not more than $750. If you win the National Championship you do get a trophy, not sure if the local championship gets a trophy or not.

If they were playing courses that I could not get on or where the greens fees were that price range, I might think about entering a tournament or two. It's just tough, at least for me, justifying $180 for a $20 course.

I wish you the best of luck.

I would love to play on the Golf Channel Tour but way too expensive for me.
I was thinking about checking out the egolf amateur tour here in NC.

I joined it. If it's no fun at least I won't be out much money.

I play on this tour in Michigan. It was $90 to get your tour card and the tournaments cost between $75-$100, depending on the course. The courses are some of the best in the area, so well worth it. There is a Championship flight, A flight, B flight, C flight, and D flight. Based on your handicap is what flight you get into. Each flight winner gets a trophy and about $150 gift card, depending on how many people join the tournament. They also pay out in a gift card for the 2nd and 3rd place as well. You can also pay to get into greenies and skins if you want. I played last year and am playing again this year and I love it. Here is the site if you want to check it out.

This is my second year playing on this tour in Houston. They play pretty good courses around here and cost about $110/tournament. First place pays about $120 in gift certificates to TGW. I won 4 times last year and got bumped up a flight for the last tournament. The flights are pretty tightly spaced and I have not seen any indication of sandbagging (you don't get strokes in these tournaments. It is straight up within your flight). I played on a different tour here a few years back that gave the strokes and had wide flights (I was in the 10 - 18 hdcp flight). Sandbagging was crazy there. 18 cappers shooting low 80's in driving rain and wind.

I recommend the tour is you like competition and can afford it but it also depends on how your local tour is run.

Apparently this used to be the American Amateur Tour (or something like that) and The Golf Channel bought them out. Alot of our local directors quit after the first year and are planning on starting their own tour after their no-compete runs out (I think they have to wait 1 more year).

Played on the Golf Channel tour for the past 2 seasons. It used to be the American Amateur Golf Tour, and is still run by them, but the Golf Channel put lots of money into promoting it so it's known as the Golf Channel Amateur Tour.

In the area that I play (Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa) It is very well run. Sean Steele the tour director does a fantastic job. It's tough to put together events to please players of all ability levels. Sean does a great job getting some of the best courses in the region to host tournaments, and the level of competition is very good. In the Championship flight where I play, over par scores seldom win. My only gripe with it is the course setup for the Championship flight. Normally we would play the tips, but they are always set up in the 6500-6700 range, and I think that's too short for scratch golfers.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
