Hi, im 16 and just started playing this great game last year, i ended up playing everyday during the summer and ended up playing with an 11. i saved up some money and bought myself some Cleveland CG gold irons. They work great, and i love them. But i do know that blades (from what i have read and been told) give you better feel, and better perofrmance (or so ive heard). I ened up hitting some blades and they seemed to fly preety nice and feel good excpet for miss hits. So sience i am still preety much new should i just stick with my CG Golds or would it help my game to get blades. thanks a bunch

Please stick with you CG Golds--if you dont hit the center of the face on forged blades--forget it--your distance will fall off dramatically...Keep the CG Golds--they are a super club and i believe that they are used on the PGA Tour--so why fix it if it aint broke? Best of luck and save your money

It sounds like you're doing very well for yourself in such a short amount of time. Maybe you're a natural for this game. Keep up the good work!

To answer your question, I'd say that because you're young, you don't have to rush things along too quickly. But at the same time, if you're developing so well, you want clubs that won't hold you back.

I'd suggest that you add that other forged wedge that you need (gap wedge?) and play with those two for the summer. Your two wedges, of course, would be used a lot during your short game from within a 100 yards or so. Once you're very comfortable & confidant hitting a wedge shot from 100 yards, then it would be a good time to go shopping.

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck

I would actually say a players cavity would be best if you really want to change. These are irons with a very small cavity that offer a ballance between forgiveness and workability. Essentially that is what you gain with a blade (workability and shot control), but you loose forgiveness... and you will loose a lot moving from those CG golds to a blade... of course it is not really necessary to change, the golds are good clubs, they just have a bit more offset and are not as easy to work the ball with. I would wait until I could begin to move the ball before I even thought of switching, but if you do want to switch I would move to a player's cavity until you get low sngle digits.

Here are some good player's cavities to consider, although not an exhaustive list...
CG Reds
Mizuno MP-57 or MP-60
TM R7 TP
Adams Idea Pro Forged
Titleist 695 or other model (new AP2)
Callaway Forged X-tour
Bridgestone J33
My Clubs: Callaway FT-i Tour LCG 9.5° w/ Matrix Ozik Xcon 6 stiff; Sonartec GS Tour 14° w/ Graphite Design Red Ice 70 stiff; Adams Idea Pro 2h(18°) & 3h(20°) w/ Aldila VS Proto 80 stiff; Adams Idea Pro Forged 4-PW w/ TT Black Gold stiff; Cleveland CG12 DSG RTG 52°-10° & 58°-10°; Odyssey...

No--your gap wedge is most likely 52 degrees and I would invest in a hybrid actually for you--Your wedges are fine--

your PW is 45* and you have a 58*... so a 52* would probably be a good one. Nothing wrong with 52* 58* as a wedge setup.

My advice would be much different from the traditional line of thought. I feel if you have a chance to move to a players club while your are a new golfer..do it. They will accelerate your learning curve just as much as any instruction. They make you swing correctly.I learned the game with players irons and i feel it made me learn a proper swing faster because you have to center strike those to get good results. The irons made me swing with better tempo and control than would of otherwise had i been playing a game improvement club. IMO game improvement clubs just prolong bad swings. You want as little help from your equipment as possible when you are a new golfer. You will duff the blades around alot for a while, but with time and good practice you will improve. If you find a good cavity set, i would get them :)

As far as that wedge goes... I wouldn't get the one that is an add on to the set, I would get a CG12 or CG14 or another Callaway in 52* loft. The gap wedges that come with or supplement sets are often not as good as the individually sold wedges which offer variations in bounce, grind, and otherwise.

Not sure what that question at the end is... "advantage or pro cavitys"

Cavities will get the ball in the air a little more than a muscle back blade. A little more forgiveness on off center hits as well. But with any blade, better to miss towards the heel than the toe. If you miss any blade on the toe side, its usually bad news.

you give the OP this advice but you yourself don't play blades don't you think he would be better keeping some of that forgiveness with a smaller cavity type iron, not just jump straight to a blade... a club so unforgiving some tour pros don't use. I understand your thinking about ingraining improper swings and not being tight with your swing, but there is a balance.

i already have the CG gold gap wedge it came with my set. Its a 50* so right now i go 45 50 58. I feel like a 54 would be perfect

I play cavity blades. titlest 695cb's. I think when you're learning golf you shouldnt have that much help from your equipment. Once you're comfortable with the swing and have an understanding of what a proper strike is, then maybe you can go to a more forgiving iron to get the extra benefits.

that changes everything... yeah go with the 54* if you want another wedge. Or maybe r7 425 was on to something... what is the gap betweem that driver and 1-iron hybrid... maybe a 3-wood.

    • Day 133 - Played 9 again. Driver was great, putting was better, but shots inside 100 were awful.
    • Day 36: 15 balls, same as last few days. Then a little indoor putting.
    • hey guys, sorry about the kind of short notice, but i'm not going to be able to make it to the outing this year....
    • Had to correct the distance - should have read 5,400 not 5,500  yds.
    • Had to report this one - played Minnesott again today with my son.  We played behind the Friday Men's group and had a decently paced round.  My round started off par-par-bogie.  I was feeling good to be +1 through three.  Played the next two par - par and then disaster hits - well I thought it may be the unravelling of +1 through five.  Tee shot on six is a hard pull hook into the ditch separating four and six.  I know the ball is lost and re-tee - hitting three off the tee on this par five.  Long story short - what should have been at worst a bogie became a triple 8.  Now I'm +4 through six holes.  Get a solid par on seven (which I celebrated as a solid recovery hole).  Eight is a birdie and I'm back to three over.  Nine, a par 3 over water, finishes par for a 39 front.   We roll to the back to where I birdie ten (the toughest hole on the back) to be -1 after the first hole on the back, +2 for the round.  Par eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen and fifteen - that was an in the zone moment.  Have to note that fourteen - the second par 3 on the back - I hit the tee shot just short right of the flag.  Easy pitch with the 56 should put me close for a tap in par.  It does not happen - as I duff the pitch to about 3yds closer.  I reset and this time I nip it nicely only to see it land and slowly roll to the cup and drop in for a chip-in par save ( a first).   We get to sixteen and I am thinking this could be a really good round.  It's also a par 5 and I hit a solid tee shot.  I'm about 220 from the center of the green and figure I can layup with the 3w as there is a nice landing area in front of the green and it would play nicely into the typical distance I hit this club.  I'm sitting about 50 yds from the flag to the right hand side.  I overcook the 56 and see the ball bounce off the back of the turtle green.  I hit an easy 56 again to see the ball roll to the other side of the green.  Long story it became a 3putt double.  Now I am +4 through sixteen.  The last two holes are solid pars - one an up and down, the other a GIR two putt. Finished the back 1 over at 37.  Total score is a 76!  A new personal best.  Best "all around" play through the bag to date.
