I just returned home last night from another successful golf outing, but this really has more to do with the gentleman that I beat...

He was a good 20 yards off every tee longer than me, and his ball flight was fantastic, but 150 in and around the green he was horrific. He mentioned halfway thru the round how he noticed that all my drives seemed to ballon and when it landed it was always soft, he said this had alot to do with the backspin being produced from my driver. I consider myself amoung the top amateur players in the US, but I have always played clubs directly off the shelf. I basically find a bargin and I play it. But now I am really giving some thought to the shafts and driver/3w heads. For example he was swinging a callaway FT-5 and when his drive landed he got at least another 50 or so yards from the roll out.

I guess what I need to know is what are some good drivers that eliminate spin, or at least lessen it. I am currently swinging a callaway 460 with a stiff shaft.

Thanks

Could be:

1) your swing 2) your ball 3) your clubhead/shaft combo 4) any combination of the above

Uhm... Yet your handicap "depends"? Quite frankly if you're one of the "top amateur players in the U.S." it shouldn't take some dude to point out that your drives balloon.

Roll is over-rated. Maximize your carry yardage. Ballooning hurts carry yardage, too.

Until you get on a launch monitor and/or give us some more details, there's not much we can do to help. If you're certain it's the equipment and you won't change your ball, you'd probably start with the shaft, then look at the clubhead second.

If you are a top US Amateur get on a launch monitor with a respectable pro/company and get what gives you the best results, and dont ask a golf forum for advice is my best advice.

"Depends" on if you know me or not... :)

And at $500 to $1500 a hole, most guys usually don't comment on the others game when they pick up on something.... But I will agree on the getting into trouble part, He rolled into trouble on at least 5 holes due to the fact that he went straight through the fairway. And keep in mind that this couse plays at 8200 yards...

I have already contacted a respectable pro who is going to arrange for me to do that...

But your statement about not asking a golf forum for advice, has got to be the worst advice I have received so far.

Oh bologna. Even if that were true, you're not actually an amateur.

Uh huh. Riiiight.

I think his advice was just about spot on. If you're as good as you say you are (and I don't for one second believe you), then you know more about golf than virtually anyone else on here. I don't think it's going out on a ledge to say that none of us have problems with ballooned drives on an 8200 yard course for $1500/hole.

I will say that a good portion of us would have noticed that our drives ballooned, though. Pretty suspect that you had to have it pointed out to you. I'm not down for whatever kind of game you're playing here. I was tempted to close the thread, but I'll hold off for a bit as a bit of an experiment.

1) your swing -

Last 6 rounds were played at 7 under. Pretty sure the swing is ok.. 2) your ball - ProV1 X 3) your clubhead/shaft combo - Callaway 460 10 degree / Callaway Stiff 4) any combination of the above Thanks for your input.

http://www.rtjgolf.com/courses/ross_.../scorecard.htm And listen, I am not out to prove anything to any of you. But if you care to look at the scorecard and call the number you can find out for yourself what the course record is, and then you will see that I hold it. Now, I was just looking for info on low spin drivers, that's all. But if any of you care to make alittle wager I am more than well known at my home couse and I will even put you up for the weekend. Now, any advice on the drivers would be great. But until you call and confirm my info please keep your comments to yourself. For you are only looking stupid to those that do.

When i was ballooning my driver it was a combo of things. shaft+loft on the driver+a bad body move on the start down where I would dip my right shoulder and then lean backwards after impact. I got the body move corrected by practicing staying more level throughout the swing, but the drives still ballooned. I got a different shaft put on my old r580 and saw big improvement in trajectory. I still was using too much loft(10.5) but my drives became much more acceptable after making those two changes.

1) your swing -

That doesn't mean you've got a perfect driver swing.

Hit down too much with your driver and you generate too much backspin. Sweep it on a slight upswing and you generate less backspin. Duh.
For you are only looking stupid to those that do.

Uhh... yeah. You're a real barrel of sunshine.

Yeah, I agree. My earlier suspicions were simply confirmed by the later posts.

Thread closed. P.S. And no, I wasn't the guy that put you under with a negative rep comment, but I can't say you don't deserve it.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
