Does anyone have any experience in Putting Competitions held by your golf club.  The intention is to create some interest near the bar area where a putting green is located on a Friday evening.

What have been some great formats to have or any other experiences with these events.

This can be great fun. Here is how we did it. Teams of four. Number off each person 1, 2, 3, 4. Then you go find each of the other people with your number and play a match against them. We did it on a huge putting green and they were 18 hole matches with hole numbers marked off. Play to a finish so playoff if tied. Count up how many points each team has and you have a winner.
The finding others with your number is a good way to get people talking to each other. There’s dead time to go get a drink and stuff. Much easier to go up to a group of people you don’t know and say “any 2s here?” than it is to just meet people. Automatic icebreaker. You do need quite a few people though to really make it worthwhile.

A huge practice green helps. I have participated in one where the course created 18 holes complete with sand, O.B. and "trees" (plastic ones).

    • Leslie Park - 41/38/79.  9.4 differential. This comes after several weeks of mediocre golf with my handicap index climbing to 10.8

    • The following was posted online by someone who appears to know what he is talking about: This tournament was 5,619 yards (par 71), so below an average 18-hole high school varsity event. All four par-3's were 152 yards or less (with one measuring 99 and another 128). The longest par 5 was 489 yards.  The student has a GHIN handicap account dating back to 2022 with -0- scores posted. I could believe a score of 30 for nine holes but performing at that level for 18 holes would be a stretch. Ultimately, the kid is going to need to perform at a fairly high level from now on for anyone to believe this score.
    • I came to #14 yesterday at my "home" course with a mediocre game through the first 13 holes. My drive found the right rough and when I got to the ball, it was in a nice thick grassy lie. Adding to the difficulty, the crew was up on the green in the middle of changing the hole location. I waited but they waved me up. I hit a nice rescue club on to the green, 30-35 feet from the soon to be old hole location. There were three grounds crew workers chatting and watching me. I lightly stroked my ball, the greens were lightning quick, and watched the ball slowly take a 6-foot break directly into the heart of the hole. The gallery exploded with applause and I tipped my hat. 😉   p.s. I birdied the next hole, too. Sadly, that was the end of the fireworks for the day.
