Little bit of history then I will get to my question. I played golf all the time about 15 years ago when I was a young teen. I was never really a good golfer but not terrible by any means. I played a few times a season, up until a few years ago when I just would hit the Driving Range for fun. I was given a set of what I believe was Ping Zing knockoffs for my 1st and only complete set of clubs.

Last year the clubs were just painful to hit. No matter how I hit the ball it would sting my hands to the point where I was afraid to take swings. So basically I'd toss my irons in the bag and just use the driver and some woods.

Some of my friends go out for a round a week and they planted the bug for me to get out there. Well I do not want to use these clubs so I decided to do some reading and figure out what type of equipment is out there. Pretty much the reason for me to join this forum.

Equipment has changed a ton since the last time i was somewhat serious about golf. So at the advice of my friends and headed down to Golfers Warehouse here in MA. That place is great you can demo any iron they have on display to get a feel for the club. They also gave me a fitting saying i need 1/2" over club length and Oversized grips.

I tried a bunch of clubs and I narrowed it down to 2 of them.
1st ones were Callaway's Big Bertha and the others also Callaway's X20
I like both of them, I do some reading on here and some people are not fond of Big Bertha's

My question is which ones would you guys recommend?

I also am looking at the big bertha irons. I like them. I don't know how much research you did, but I went to a local driving range and they had a demo day and callaway was there. Basically they fitted the irons for my swing. You might call around your area ranges.

Good luck in your search,

I am also looking at Big Bertha's, and I hit them more consistently than any other iron set. I think the main criticism of Big Bertha's on this forum is that they are too forgiving, and that they hide so many swing flaws that you don't learn a proper swing.

In my bag:

Driver: HiBore XL
3-Wood: Insight BUL
5-Wood: Insight BUL

4-Hybrid: Taylormade Burner Rescue

Irons: Big Bertha 2006, 5-PW

GW: CG11 50*

SW: CG11 54* (bent to 55*)

LW: CG11 60*

Putter: Odyssey D.A.R.T White Ice

Im not a very familar with callaway irons except for their x-forged, which from what I read may not be for you. But Lamkin Grips makes a nice shock reducing grip if you're worried about sting.

They are both great sets but the Bertha's are the easiest to hit. The X-20's look cleaner (thiner top edge and sole) but if you are inconsistent in how often you play you will find the Big Berthas easier to come back to.

I ordered the Bertha's yesterday, was trying to get some opinions on if i made a good choice.

When i demoed a few yesterday I felt zero sting. Just making the point on how bad my old clubs were and my reasons for getting new ones.

Thanks for the input

I think you made a wise choice. Let me know how they work for you after you play with them

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
