Guys,

I don't have the money to go get fitted for a shaft right now, so i am looking for some opinions. I recently got my 907D2, and the control i've picked up is awesome. But I am really balooning the ball bad, and my launch angle is wayyy high.

I was playing a Titleist 975J, 7.5*, Graffaloy Pro-lite Elite Shaft

Now i'm playing a Titleist 907D2, 9.5*, Nippon Tour Graphite(came on it)

I play standard length and swing roughly around 107 mph

I want to know if anyone knows any good SHAFT combinations for this driver? Or any shafts that could help me stabilize my ball flight.

I may have to see if I could get that driver bent or hozel change to 8.5*.

Thanks!!

My pro uses that club with a V2 high launch shaft (the bright yellow one i think) with 8.5degrees head loft and says he does very well with it. I would guess he has a similar swing speed, he flies his driver about 250-260 and gets some draw roll to about 270-280.

Don't you have the specs of your last driver? If so, go to www.aldila.com . I'm sure you can find a moderately priced shaft that fits your needs. All the specs are listed.

How much are you willing to spend? You might want to go the route of a less expensive shaft but pay for the puring process. At the very least, you will have a driver shaft that has a constant flex/kick point.

On a side note, the difference in the 'ideal' flight between a 7.5 deg 975J and a 9.5 deg 907D2 will be huge. Even if you compared the 975J v 907D2, both with 9.5 deg, I reckon the 907 will fly higher. The modern clubs have a different flight.

Before, you may have landed at 230 yds and rolled to 270. Now you'll carry to 260 and roll to 280 - it often looks like a balloon.

This may be the issue, rather than the shaft itself?

I agree with what your saying and I increased loft with this driver because it was a "newer" model. And I want to drop the loft to 8.5, if thats possible.

But, I went from averaging 280-290 and reaching 300, to dropping to 260-270. I get absolutely no roll now.

My launch angle is far too high, then it suddenly rises and drops, like im hitting into a head wind everytime. Which is called ballooning, So I know what I'm looking at.

I just don't know enough about shaft specifics to help myself, without getting a fit. I know kick, flex, tourque, etc blah, can all attribute and possibly tweak my ball flight some. I just need some tips from other in what shaft I should be interested in.

Also, i don't swing as hard as I used to, so I know i don't have that super distance anymore. But I know my shot is ballooning, and its taking about 10 yards from me. Which has pushed me back an iron on average in the fairway, and I would like to retain that ten yards.

Thx

LSU,

Thanks for beating the Buckeys. Anyway, I am having the exact same problem with my D2. With mine, I am not really ballooning the ball though. I used a 983 with the YS-6 shaft and could hit any shot I wanted so I got the D2 with the same shaft. I use an 8.5 and the launch angle for the D2 is much higher than previous models, plus it has more spin. My ball flight is high but it stays at about the same height throughout the shot. My problem is that it comes down at a steeper angle which eliminates roll. I am carrying the D2 a little further but most times I have a plug in the fairway and a dirty ball. I am losing 30 yards or so of roll since the fairways here get very firm.

I have asked around about this club with this issue and most of the opinions are for the Proforce V2 shaft. I am a little unsure about the specifics of the shaft, but whatever it has or does, it should launch a little lower with less spin. The Diamana Whiteboard came up as well.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
