My signature shows my current equipment and I am trying to convince myself to upgrade even though I am still horrible.

Is a 3 wood really necessary? I am coming up short on most par 5's that are around 550 but I'm thinking its not like I would hit the 3 wood that accurately anyways. Although, I know many hit the 3 wood on par 4's but do you get that much more distance with the 3 wood over a hybrid? Looking to get the Ping G10.

My Ping irons are very well aged and recently had to have the 7 iron reshafted since it broke which costed me $50. Now the 5 iron is broke and I've been short gripping the 4 iron which I am not great at hitting. Looking to get the Wilson Ci7's. Was contemplating on the G10's but heard they hit real high. Oh and should I be getting stiff?

Possibly a 56deg Cleveland C14 wedge but don't know whats the improvement over my SW from Ping Eye2.

Want to just upgrade the cheapo blade putter to something like the Ping Karsten B60 or Odyssey White Hot Tour #2.

Thanks for your advice in advance!!!

Do you hit your current equipment well? If you do, and you don't play often enough to justify the purchase cost, I'd suggest against upgrading.

Of course, between the fact that you're on this board and your user name, I'm guessing that you enjoy playing regularly. I just upgraded from my starter set, despite being in your stated handicap range (20+). I got players' irons, and I hit them well already.

I have a 3-Wood, and I hit it higher and shorter than my Driver off the tee, and I hit worm burners off the fairway more often than not. I've seriously debated not using it, although I do need it on longer par-3s (I'm a short hitter at the moment). For courses where I don't need it on par-3s, I do seriously consider leaving it behind.

Well, not every TOUR pro has a 5-iron in his bag. Was it Charlie Wi who doesn't carry one? Or was he carrying two? I just read something about one pro who carries two and one who doesn't carry one.

Unless you need new irons like very soon , I suggest going to a variety of demo days and hitting what the companies have to offer. As for ball flight, this can be somewhat adjusted by shafts (I think that's what kick point affects). As for flex, most companies will do a fitting for you once you decide to buy from them - Mizuno did it for free, and I think Ping does it for free. I'd be surprised if companies charged for a simple fitting (if you want the half-day one, it'll cost you for sure).

Well, I upgraded my wedges since my old ones were "whatever I found cheap in the used bin" - with no accounting for fitting; I was just choosing loft and bounce before that. Now I got fit and chose loft and bounce. If you like your SW, stick with it for a bit, and consider a new one when you know how it'll fit with your new set.

Those are pretty sweet putters.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
