I'm considering picking up a new fairway wood or two. I've pretty much narrowed it down to the 906F4 and the Bobby Jones Fairway clubs. I prefer a smallish head in my fairway clubs, and those two are about the only ones that really fit the bill.

I'm currently using a pair of TaylorMade R580 series woods. My concern is that the extra .5* loft on the F4 might cost me some distance. My gaps are pretty good between clubs. Although a little more distance might be nice, any less would be a problem. Does the 13.5 make more sense?

I have the same issue with the 5 wood as well. So I guess my most basic question is how much does that .5* matter?

I carry a 13.5 906f4 and can say it launches nearly as high as a 15 would. But the shaft you pick for it will determine that. I have a high kick UST shaft in mine. I think the extra half degree loft in the f4's is some kind of compensation in the design of the club, i dont think it adds any significant ball flight differences from the 906f2. Ive never had the ball balloon off of mine. I carry it about 230 and it will roll significantly, sometimes 20 yards for me if it lands on fairways. Ive never hit the 15.5 but im assuming it would be a little easier to use than the 13.5 would be. I will add that neither is "easy" to hit dead strait, you'll get a much better reuslt from the club if you like to work the ball. The head shapes on the 906 series fairway woods are the sexiest and confidence inspiring you will see, though.

I used to have a 15 degree 906f2 and i didnt really notice any difference in feel or performance besides the fact im using a stronger loft on the f4. Perhaps you can give the f2 a try if you're worried about the extra half degree. It would probably be alot cheaper too.

Ditto all the above. The F4's have a lower CG, resulting in a higher launch angle. It's within a degree, and likely within half a degree, of the F2.

I have the 13.5 f4 with a 90 gram v2 shaft, and i have no problem getting it up in the air. I also don't have any problem keeping it low when I want. It's a great club.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
