i'm staying in pawley's island and was looking at courses
i'm definitely playing caledonia (played it last year....one of my favorites)
i need two other to choose....i was looking at:
Wachesaw East, Pawley's plantation, TPC MB, Legends resort (heathland, moorland), Prestwick country club, Blackmoor, world tour
anyone know any thing about these courses (or others besides river club and willbrook....played em)?

I've played about 50 courses in the MB area, including all the ones on your list. Caledonia is my favorite on the Southern part of the Strand and it is a course worth playing a second time. You won't play anything better in the area. As for the others here area few quick thoughts;

Pawleys Plantation: The back 9 is very scenic with some great marshalnd holes. The signature hole is a par three that is all carry over the marshland. The fromt 9 is okay. The greens are usually very fast and tough to hold. It is not an easy course. There is a lot of housing aaround the first 10 holes.

True Blue: This is a sister course of Caledonia, and located right across the road from Cally. It's a good play to do them both if you plan on 36 a day. It is quite different in style than Cally. Lots of huge waste areas/bunkers. I like it a lot, but not everyone does.

Heritage: This is the closest course to Caledonia as far as the look and style of the course. Excellent in all areas except it has a lot of houses. I would play True Blue or Pawleys if you want something different than Cally.

TPC: This is a great woodland course. Good mix of holes, usually great condition, very secluded which I like.

Wachesaw East and Blackmoor: Not bad courses, but just a notch below the others as far as conditioning and memorability. These would be toward the bottom of my list from among the ones you mentioned.

Prestwick: This is an under-rated course IMO. I like it a lot. It has a wide varity of hols. Some with big cross bunkers, some with water, some woodland holes. It is a little less expensive than some of the others and a very good deal.

World Tour: This has 27 holes based on famous holes from around the world. You probably won't rcognize most of them and even some of the most famous ones (like Amen Corner from Augusta) are only somewaht similar, it is a fun course to play once. The service is great and it is always in good condition. It is over-priced IMO

Founder Club at pawleys. This used to be Seagull, but they completetly re-did it and it just re-opened. I Haven't played it, but its gotten good reviews. I hear it is similar to True Blue in that it has lots of big waste bunkers.

Legends Resort -(Heathland Parkland and Moorland) Good courses located further North than the others on your list so will require a longer ride form the Pawleys area. Each is different from the others in style. Good choice if you play 36 a day because you can get a good deal on a replay at a different course at the Legends. Otherwise play one of the others.

Have fun. There is a lot of good gold there and the ones on your list won't disappoint. Just don't expect them to be as nice as Caledonia. If you want other courses that nice, go a littel further North and play The Dunes Club, Tidewater or the courses at Barefoot Resort

THe Dunes Golf and Beach Club. This one is a must play if you are going to Myrtle. Also the Dye course at Barefoot is a great course, although you can't really go wrong with any of the Barefoot Courses. Also King's North at Mytle Beach National is a great course as well.

I've never played World Tour, but everybody I've talked to raves about it. Can't go wrong with the Legends, it's almost always in great shape. TPC @ Myrtle is nice, but perhaps a bit pricey for what you get. I'd stay away from Pawleys Plantation (not bad, but there's far better courses out there) and Blackmoor (just not worth the time, period).

I'm not a big fan of True Blue. If you're in Pawley's and don't want to travel far, than of course True Blue and the Heritage are your best bets. But Prestwick and TPC Myrtle are not too far away. Still, this time of year the traffic should be pretty dead, so making a trip to the Legends, Dunes or World Tour shouldn't be too bad.

That sounds about right. Although if you really want different, then I would add True Blue to the list, that's much different from any course in the MB area. I'd say about 70% of the people that play True Blue love it and 30% hate it. Very polarizing golf course.

I am heading there this week also. How are Man of War, The Witch and The Wizard.

The couple me and the wife are going with are making all the plans and he is making plans for us to play these threee courses.

Has anyone played them?

Oyster Bay is a fantastic course, I am surprised no one has mentioned it.
I've played it in march each of the past three years and It's my favorite in Myrtle. Just watch out for the gators.

A lot of people seem to think World Tour is overrated and/or over priced.
They provide superior service and the course is beautiful. I'll concede that the idea of the course is better than the final product, but if you didn't know each hole was a copy, you'd be impressed anyway. Overpriced? Greens fees at WT are like a third what they are at Caledonia.

Oyster Bay is an excellent course, but it is located much further North than Pawleys island, which is where he is staying.

Green fees at World Tour are about 80% of Caledonia's, not 30%

How are Man of War, The Witch and The Wizard.

They are solid courses. Not the top tier of MB courses but they are good mid tier MB courses and fairly priced. The Witch is my favorite of the three. You will enjoy them, but won't be blown away

I am heading there this week also. How are Man of War, The Witch and The Wizard.

I used to work at Man O' War over 10 years ago. I recommend their courses. The Witch, if the greens are right, is the best of the three. Man O' War doesn't have a bad hole on the entire course and is usually in excellent shape. The Wizard is a links style course and it's a solid track, but nothing spectacular. I recommend the Wizard for Myrtle golf trips because it's a great course to start your golf vacation on since it's wide open, let's you bust out the driver, and is a confidence builder.

I would still consider it a viable option for a Myrtle trip. Especially if you are staying in N Myrtle Beach. It's not like it's in Chapel Hill.

From Pawleys Island to Oyter Bay is probably close to an hour. It's really not a bad trip from one place to another and I'd probably just try to schedule an afternoon tee time. I think it's well worth the trip to play some of the courses up on the NC border.

Was there in May and played all my regulars.I highly recommend Heritage since they redid all the greens they are perfect.I played Founders club and did not care for it.The Dunes is the best pure golf course in Myrtle.Played the Love course and it was a tad beat up.If you need a solid but not great try Long bay it was in great shape.Now with 32 and 22 open going from Pawleys to the north myrtle is fairly simple.

I have played Caladonia and love it.

The other one near there is True Blue. It is fairly good, but bent grass greens make it dificult.

Next time you go definatly try and play The Dunes and The Dye Club. Those were the two best out of the five i played there.
