I am pretty confident with my PW from 100-70yds, I employ my SW when I'm coming from the fringe or just outside. Now today I played with a buddy that let me try his Cleveland 58* Wedge its a G10 Black Pearl if that matters. I was about 40yds out and put it 6ft from the pin.

Now my questions is this. What angle are the PW and SW at in most sets. Is the 58* that much more aggressive of a loft. The thing I liked about it was that I could give it a full swing and follow all the way through the ball and loft it into my target.

So was this a charmed shot, or is there something to a club like this?

The PW in most sets is 47-49 degrees and the SW is probably 54-56. I use a CG14 58* wedge and love it. I use it for most shots that I need to hit high and land softly.

No, with most irons sets the PW is 44*-47* and then blade irons have "traditional" lofts, where the PW is 48*

You know what, you're right. I thought that TaylorMade was the only company making their pitching wedge have the loft of an old days 8 iron, but I looked up on some websites, and not only has cobra done it but even Titleist has made the AP1 PW be 45*! This is crazy! I had to get a 48* wedge to fill the gap between my 44* PW and my 52* gap wedge! I wish companies would not mess with the lofts of their irons just so they can point out, "You just hit our PW as long as your old 9 iron," and the reason not being because you hit the club better, but because it is lofted like your 9 iron! Sorry, mini rant, I feel better now. But yeah, you're right.

I actually carry 54 degree and 58 degree Cleveland RTG wedges. My reason is a little bit different than yours. I think most people don't realize how big a gap exists between most sets pitching wedge and sand wedge.

For the most part pitching wedges are around 45 degrees - with most sand wedges coming in at 56 degrees - A DIFFERENCE OF 11 DEGREES. I play MacGregor M565s and my lofts are as follows:

Mac PW - 45 degrees
Mac GW - 50 degrees
Cleveland RTG - 54 degrees
Cleveland RTG - 58 degrees

This allows me to take a full, normal swing from 75 yards and longer. This is a big plus. Even if you feel comfortable hitting a PW from 120 and in, with practice, I guarantee you will love the ability to hit full shots as opposed to hitting 2/3rds of a PW.

I like the idea of most players starting out with a 58 degree lob wedge. Although I prefer 60, the 58 is easier to hit. When it comes to close shots around the green. I either use the 54 or 58 depending on the distance to the cup and whether it is downhill. I occasional hit the Mac 50 gap, but it doesn't feel as good around the greens.

Most people will tell you (and I agree), that bump and runs with a 7-8 iron are great if you are close to the green. I would do this more often; however, after my gap wedge (Rifle steel) the rest of my set is graphite. It's probably me, but I can't stand to chip with graphite. However, my elbow feels a lot better.

I have the same dilemma since my R7 irons have a 45*PW and 55* SW. I will probably go with 50*/56*/60*, or I might replace both the PW and SW with 48/52/56/60...

I think I am going to try and score a used 58* and try and see how I like it.

Thank you all for the advice.

Currently have 52, 56, 60 Vokey Oil Can's...replacing both with Scratch JLM-TNC 52 and 58*. Less options is better for me, as I don't run into situations to use my 60* that much..so when there IS a situation to use it, I haven't practiced with it in a while and its kind of a hit or miss.

I'd rather take my 58* and learn to hit all different kinds of shots. Full shots from 75 yards, to open the face for a flop shot behind the green. I think I do better with one club that I can hit several shots with, and it be my "go to" club...than having 3 wedges that I hit not as often.

And i'm never playing with another wedge that isn't Scratch by the way...wow, these things are the smoothest wedges and just as much spin as spin milled.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
