Thanks...I checked out the video...it definitley looks nice, but I'm not going to mind lugging around a big travel bag. I would definitely consider buying something like that if I traveled more often but I just have this one trip on the slate and maybe another later on in the year...anyone with some experience with soft travel covers in the $100 range?

I traveled to Arizona in 2007 with a bag I purchased from Golfsmith. Bag cost me about $60. I made sure, though, to wrap my clubs in towels for protection and begged the check-in counter girl to treat them as fragile. I did not want to land in Arizona with broken clubs.

If you want a higher end travel bag without the costs look at the various Buy/Sell/Trade sections of various golf message boards, like this one and ebay, too.

I tend to agree with the earlier comment ... a travel bag is something you will replace frequently if you don't buy quality the first time. I went thru many soft-sided travel bags before finally getting a hard-sided case by SKB. The lower-end soft-sided cases tend to rip and tear on frequent airline flights.

If you are really only going to use this a few times, I'd get any basic soft-sided case and then wrap my clubheads in towels (pack it really tight) and hope for the best. But, understand you are taking some risk here.

Hard sided cases are the way to go for club protection, but the cases are a pain store in your garage when not in use (also, make sure your driver will fit, some of the longer drivers and hard sided cases don't mix well)

there are also some hybrid cases with hard-sided tops (for protection of club heads) and soft-sided bottoms for easy of storage, etc.

Wheels are a must-have in my opinion. It might not seem like a lot to lug your clubs from the garage to the car, but lugging thru an airport, thru baggage claim, to rental car bus, etc ... you want some good quality wheels.

Also, I've read about some services that will ship your clubs for you ahead of time ... I used to think that was silly until the airlines started charging baggage fees, now it makes some sense to explore some of those shipping services.

I have the Ogio Straight Jacket and it's a very sturdy bag. You can get them at Bed Bath & Beyond for $40 on clearance. If you live near one, you can get them for even less with the 20% off coupon that they always send in the mail. Here's the link:

Also search for the Club Glove Stiff Arm. It will really help protect your clubs from getting hit head on. Imagine your bag sliding down the conveyor belt head first and hit the rail at the baggage pickup. It could hit hard enough to dent or snap your shafts. For $25, it's a very small investment.

Bought a cheap soft bag. Didn't last for very long. The bottom wore out from dragging it through airports, etc. If you are buying a soft bag make sure the bottom side looks durable. I agree with having wheels. It is such a pain to travel with clubs these days with all the bag fees. If you are only playing once or twice consider renting a set if it's a decent course. Call ahead

Not entirely sure where I'm going to play golf...I am doing a little bit of research and I think I'll probably make a post about it here...probably going to play four or five courses and I'm thinking a few public courses like Jackson Park and then one or two nicer courses like Harborside International, George W. Dunne and maybe even Cog Hill No.4...

Chicago's not entirely foreign to me though, I worked in Downers Grove for a summer a few years ago and both my brothers went to school around there (Wheaton, U of I)...unfortunatley I didn't pick up golf until last summer so I've never played there.

Thanks a lot buddy, that's exactly what I ordered...should be adequate...I'll be packing in towels and I'll look into that Club Glove Stiff Arm. Turns out I will actually be going to SF in 2 weeks and Chicago in 3 weeks...so it looks like I might be using it a little more than I thought....hopefully everything goes well

Not sure if you already made the trip to Chicago, but thought I would throw you my 2 cents (I went to school around Chicago and lived downtown for several years). I would stay away from Jackson Park (long story, but the gist is me and three buddies got held up at gun point at Jackson Park). Harbour Side is expensive, but very very nice. It's long and a lot of fun! George Dunne is one of the nicer park courses, it is tight, and will be cheaper than Harbour Side. I have not played at Cog Hill yet, so can't provide any insight there. Have fun on your trip.

Oops, you already went to Chicago...where did you play?

well i stopped in at my local edwin watts store to ask about renting a hard side travel bag and the guy stated that they use to have one that they rented out but he said it came back once and it was detroyed so they didnt have one anymore, then he said something that just made my day.... He stated that he had one in the store that was his own personal one that he never used and would loan it to me. i was like holy crap is this guy serious. so i asked sounds good how much are you wanting to rent it for, and then he said those two magical words: NO CHARGE!!! :) After i heard him say that i was like sweet, you got a deal, so i went in the back with him took a look at it, the hard travel bag was in great shape, we exchanged info, i took it out to my suv, thank god i had my clubs in the back, i took them out and tested to see how they would fit, and booyaaa they fit perfectly!!!! i was soo happy at that point, granted i had already purchased some addidas golf shoes from there that day as well so im sure that helped and i have been there several times before so this guy recognized me, but never in a million years would i have thought this would of happened!!!! if i didnt see this post and someone on here suggest seeing if you can rent one this never would of happened.

i just saved myself a couple hundred dollars, ill be putting that money towards lessons for sure!! and since the person picking me up has a full size pickup getting that bag in the vehicle will be no problem either.

Get the soft travel bag with wheels. Then get a old broom stick or piece of pvc pipe and cut it 2" longer then your driver. Pad everything on the top with towels. I have done this on multiple trips to Sctoland and other places and never had a problem. One more thing do something to mark your bag so it is diffewrnt have seen so many alike at the baggage claim.

I got the club glove - its soft but it is as sturdy and trust worthy as a hard travel cover, without looking like your carrying a coffin through the airport! They are not cheap but a worthwile investment, comes with a protective pole to fit in you bag while using the glove, making it impossible for clubs to get broken. It has about 10 zips and straps so its a pretty safe bet you clubs aint falling out! Get what you pay for!

    • Got off to probably one of my best starts ever last night.   Was -1 thru 5 and finished the front 9 with a +1 (37).   The back 9 wasn't very good but we were playing speed golf to try and beat the darkness.   Ended up with 37/44 for an 81.   Still a great score for me.    My last 5-6 rounds have all contributed to my handicap index so we trending in the right direction.
    • I don't see the swing speed as any advantage or disadvantage either way. While they don't have the "WOW!" factor that some of the men have. i.e. "Did you see Rory's 380 yard drive on 17!" That kind of thing. They do, however, play the courses shorter. I think their average LPGA Tour course is like 6400 yards, compared to 7300 for the men. So when I watch it on TV it looks kinda the same. They hit driver then 8 iron, just like the men hit driver then 8 iron. I don't really care that the hole is 100 yards shorter or whatever.  Let me put it another way. If I was to watch the WNBA and then watch the NBA, I would immediately notice how much slower the players are. How much more the men play above the rim. etc... Why? Because the court is the same size. The hoop is the same height. When I watch the LPGA Tour and then watch the PGA Tour, I don't notice (as much). They hit driver then 5 iron into a par-5 just like the men do. Because the course is smaller, it looks similar. BTW - The same is true of softball vs baseball. The softball diamond is much smaller. So, the line shots look similar, there are equally as many home runs, because the field is smaller it looks pretty similar in play.  Here's where to my way of thinking, they can make some hay. If the LPGA Tour was to lead the way in terms of pace of play they may be able to add additional excitement to their game and possibly start to make some converts. I'm an idiot who has never been a sports commissioner. But it seems that when MLB noticed their games started approaching 4 hours and Major League Soccer was always done in under 2 hours. They made changes to try to improve and it seems to be working.  With the LPGA Tour it seems you either need exciting personalities or need exciting play. If they improve the pace of play issue it could add to exciting play. Again, I'm no expert but that seems like an area they could lead instead of follow. It does seem they've recognized this. So, we shall see.
