Some background...

I hit the driver quite long, but have been struggling greatly with inconsistency and a smother hook. I am playing with a Taylor R7 425 with the stock Fuji 65 Stiff.

So, I went to my fitter last night and did a swing analysis. My avg clubhead speed was 117. He says that I'm way overpowering the stock TaylorMade "Fuji" shaft that came with my R7 . The swing monitor was showing the clubface being pretty well closed my first few swings. Obviously part of it is my swing, but what it also showed was a consistent adjustment that I was making. My "opened-closed" clubface made a sweet christmas tree pattern. I apparently keep overadjusting on every swing for what is going on, which make a HELL of a lot of sense given my recent "hook / slice / hook / slice" performances.

He said he's going to research shafts and is looking for something between 70 - 80 grams, X-stiff, with a stiffer tip that fits my swing characteristics. My tempo came out at 1.10 on avg and he had me swing a club (looks like an oversized iron) with a plastic head and a weight that moves from heel to the toe based upon your swing (I have no idea what this tells you), but it consistently read 13, which he said was very smooth for that swingspeed.

He's also suggesting cutting it down to 44" from the stock 45". We considered 43.5, but decided on 44.

So, what shafts would you all recommend? Is this enough info?

stiffer tip at that swing speed. definitely look at the diamana line from mitsubishi. i say that b/c it's corrected everything that i've wanted it to..

it took away the ballooning issue that I had... it's helped me choose and hit my spots better... try looking into the Diamana Whiteboard D73. 73 grams. 2.8 on the torque I believe and a high kickpoint which helps you keep the ball flight lower for when you crank it out. stay away from the epic shafts b/c those tips are way too soft for your speed. and what about the YS-7? even though I had the YS in my hiborexl last year and that was a little too soft which gave me that ballooning issue. the vs protos are good... basically any of the stiff or x-stiff shafts with a lower torque would be good.

Thanks for the ideas! I have the YS-7 in my 904 3 wood, but think its a little soft and may swap that one out as well.

One thing I forgot to mention was that the fitter had me try out a R580 TP with a 90 gram Fuji X-stiff shaft. I hit that pretty well. Do you think that club is comparable to the R7?

which fuji shaft did he have you swinging? the 580 comparable to the r7? I don't know the specs on either of them. I would think you can go with a heavy shaft like the d83 if you were swinging the 90. they have incredibly low torque and play stiffer than most of the other shafts. did you tell the fitter to set you up with something comparable to your current driver so you can choose the right shaft? they should have you setup with swing analysis to get you the best ball flight for your swing... i'm only basing it off of my experiences...and the YS are great shafts...but when you crank it...my feelings are you get the ball too high.

Well, I'm out of town but was able to give him a call today. He wasn't available but I was told that they're fitting a Fuji 370. I am assuming this to mean an E370, which after reading the specs sounds like a very good fit. HOwever, he's fitting it in a stiff rather than an X flex. Any thoughts?

I'll be picking up tomorrow night when I get back in town.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
