Shaving Wedges

Has anyone ever had the bounce on their wedges, shaved? Is this a viable option? I ask because two of the wedges that I like are virtually useless to me from anywhere but the bunker. The brand I use does not make the particular degree I'm using in a 6* bounce. I'd like to use them more from the 80-90 range rather than taking a full cut with my 60*.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Stan Utley's primary wedge is a 58 degree model with 12 degrees of bounce. He can hit it from a paved parking lot.

Why do you want to shave the bounce off the wedges you have? That'll change the swingweight, too.

So yeah, I've read your post a few times and I'm assuming you believe the clubs have too much bounce, but you have five different wedges in your sig and I know of several companies that offer bounce and loft combinations that would suit you. You could probably even stick with Cleveland and Mizuno and accomplish what you want.

Aside from taking a little bounce off the trailing heel area, no, most people don't shave their wedges to reduce bounce, and I'm not certain you "need" to at all. You should be fine with either what you have or an existing model.

Thanks for the reply. My problem, from 85-90 yards, is that I'm thinning the ball. I don't take much of a divot and I figured that if I shaved the bounce, a little, I would be able to have the bottom of the blade set closer to the ground.

Based on your recommendation, I guess I'll have to do some reading and figure out how to get better with my current wedges.

it's not always the arrows - it's usually the Indian.

It could be a case of putting your hands slightly ahead of the ball, having a slightly steeper attack angle or keeping your head down (not coming up off it).

So take a divot. The purpose of bounce is to help your club get out of the ground (just like it helps your club to get out of the sand).

You could give me a club with 20 degrees of bounce and so long as the fairway wasn't literally concrete, I could play with it.

Yeah. I have one high-bounce wedge and one low-bounce wedge in my set. The 60 is

rarely used because bounce is pretty helpful and versatile. When I have to use the 60, it's rarely from a super-tight, super-firm lie (i.e. near-pavement-like), and it's usually just because I need the loft. I think you've just psyched yourself out. Hit down through the ball. So long as you hit the little ball first, the bounce really won't matter much. Don't overthink it, Phil.
