What clubs for novice looking to improve?

As of this summer, I've been playing at least once a week, and am really enjoying the game. I've never worried about having a good set of clubs, as I was generally a once every month or two golfer. Now that I've been playing often, I'm starting to think that my clubs are not quite up to the standards that I'm looking for. I only say this after using other clubs, and then finding that I can actually drive the ball perfectly straight and quite far when using a quality driver, as opposed to the uncomfortable stance and reach I have to use to get a 1:3 straight drive out of my Billy Club.

So basically, I'm looking for a decent set of irons (under $200 used) that will both help me improve my game, but also give me room to improve as a player. I don't really know if there are irons designed for "beginners" (I'm not exactly looking for a "beginner" club, more of something to grow into as I progress), but I have read about some irons being much more forgiving than others. I think I've decided to use graphite shafts to get a bit more club speed, but that is still up in the air.

Also, I'd like to get a decent driver (will be buying used) that will help me primarily keep the ball headed straight. Along with that, I'd like to have at least have one fairway wood, which could possible be substituted with a hybrid 2 and 3, haven't decided yet.

I'd like to have a matching set of irons and driver/woods, but it's not completely necessary, I just like things to match like that. I don't see the putter helping my game too much, so I'm not really concerned with that for now, and I have an Adams Golf gap wedge that I like, so I'm good there too.

So, what do you all suggest?

Get a nice set of wedges and a nice putter before worrying about upgrading irons or the driver.

The first step is working on your play around the green. You'd be surprised at how quickly your scores will drop once you start getting proficient around the greens...

I am not sure I agree with the last post. On the driver definately, because not sure it should come into play that much yet. As for the putter, comfort is the main key. When it comes to irons, find something that is quite forgiving. If you like the Adams GW, (I do too), why not try out some of their less expensive sets. Or maybe even try out some of their hybrids. Adams A2 set is very inexpensive and are quite forgiving clubs. You might even be able to pick up a used set for around $200. Since new, they are a little less than 300.

After losing a bet, I had to use my Golden Bear GX2's...

They are VERY forgiving clubs. I got them at Sports Authority for $113.

If you do decide to go that route at Sports Authority, check the local Sunday paper for a 25 bucks off if you spend 100 coupon. You can use it online if you dont have a local Sports Authority, just PM me for the coupon code and I think I can round it up for ya.

Oh, and here is a used Nike Ignite driver for only $65...good deal. Although the GX2 set COMES with a driver, I personally didn't like it. Too "whippy" of a shaft for me. It's ok though.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys. I did a bit of browsing today and read about Adams Tight Lies clubs being particularly forgiving. I found a full set (D, 3W, 5W, 4-PW, P) + Bag for $250. I'm kind of thinking I might go with those, because it seems like a really great deal for a new set of all matching clubs and bag that have been labeled as really forgiving. They'd go good with my Adams GW as well.

What do you guys think about those?

They're the Tight Lies "Classics." I don't know how much of a difference that makes as far as it being a great deal, although it appears that their newer sets have hybrids included, and are a bit more expensive. It seems like a great deal to me, but I really don't know that much.

If you haven't already, buy the Adams tight lies you mentioned. I used them right down to about a 15-16 handicap. It's almost impossible not to hit them high and strait every time. Really nice for the money.

Also, buy yourself a wedge, like a 58-60 degree lob wedge, that you like the feel of, and make it your go to club around the green.

Doesn't have to be expensive,or new, just has to give you the confidence to hit your shots.

Will do. The bag that the set comes with looks perfect too. One of my favorite courses to practice on is walking course. I almost prefer walking. Big cart bags aren't my style.

I think you will be thrilled with the Adams set. I am recently an Adams convert and dont see myself changing anytime soon.

So I talked to a golf buddy about this set, and he thinks that getting this set is not a good idea. He says that they are primarily a set for senior citizens, and don't leave room to improve because they're just too easy to play with. Like I said in the OP, I am looking for something to help me improve. Is this set going to help me out, or is it just going to make me think I'm getting better?

Haha, I should have changed that. I haven't calculated my handicap, but I generally shoot in the 90's.

      Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.

      As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
