Last week I was given a Callaway Big Bertha Fusion 3 wood, the only thing is the shaft is light-flex, so I need to get it replaced. I'm on the boarder between regular and stiff flex for my driver.

I am considering just having a steel shaft put in, mainly because I have no clue when it comes to graphite shafts. Does anyone else on here use steel shafts in their fairway woods (if so, what kind)?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions on a mid-price level graphite shaft? I don't need a top level shaft, but I don't want to go cheap and suffer the consequences.

Thanks for the help!

go to a local fitter and just have someone read your swing speed and specs... go from there in terms of shaft flex

in terms of steel vs graphite depends on what you are looking for. steel is obviously heavier and will give you some control if distance isnt a problem. If you lack distance a lightweight graphite shaft fitted to your swing will give you a boost in clubhead speed and ultimately distance.

There are so many shafts out there it's hard to point you in any direction without seeing your ball flight and / or swing. Golfsmith is a great resource and they are always having sales on their shafts

Personally I love the Harrison line of shafts, great product at a good price (they dont have to shell out millions for tour sponsorships but make a quality product made here in the USA)

It's quite common to have a steel shaft in your fairway wood. If you wanted to try something in a different flex why not go for something in lightweight steel? Something like a Dynamic Gold SL is a bit lighter than a traditional steel shaft and quite cheap compared to graphite.

How exactly do you know that you are on the border between a regular and stiff shaft, are you just guessing or have you been to a clubfitter? If you haven't been and seen a clubfitter, you may well want to. He can make sure the shaft you are going to get is correct first time, sure it may cost a few dollars more to get fitted properly but if it saves getting it wrong once it has paid for itself in both dollars and more importantly the usability of the club for you.

DONT WORRY ABOUT BRANDS, HYPE, OR FANCY COLORS

First off, specs? Trajectory, swing speed, etc? I have no clue what your specs are regarding your swing and shots, so I can't really give you an idea of what shaft to get. So, I recommend you should go get fitted for either steel or graphite shafts, and see what feels best as well. I really can't help you unless you give me details...

I agree completely, however those Graman lime green things do look bloody good! Next time I'm up in Sydney I'm going to see my mate (been my clubfitter for 15 years) and see if he can find me one that suits...

I honestly can say I know several people (20+) who have UST V2 shafts because of the "cool" colors

ie - a 26 handicap with a 78 gram shaft with low, low torque

the NV is obviously a different story, thats a really cool green shaft haha

Thanks for the quick replies!!!

I'm about to go to Golfsmith right now to get fit for a shaft, I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again!

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
