So, I've been putting things off for like two years now, and finally went to the doctor today to look into getting a vasectomy I have to go see the specialist on Wednesday, and at that time have to pick a date.

For those of you who have been snipped, how long did you have to take off from golf and other activities (I also play hockey, both in summer and through winter)? Any advice from those of you who have had it done? I'm really not looking forward to it... any advice from some brothers in arms would be helpful Typically, my wife thinks I'm a *****

Oh, dude. Mang..... Comrade .

We are in the same boat, you and I. My wife and I are 42. We have a girl (6) and a boy (just turned 1). We're done making babies. She wants to stop taking the pill badly . She's starting to make these, these, how do you say?.... threats .

Gah. The whole concept, the very idea of vasectomy just is so incredibly unappealing, so viscerally and philosphically upsetting to me. Most of my friends have had it done, and of course rib me about 'cowboying up' but I think they just want me to join them in their misery and eunuchdom.

I know this sounds terrible, but I find my self wanting to keep stalling and hoping that my wife will start having hot-flashes and go through "the change" before I'm forced to go under the knife.

My folks have a condo on Maui. I'm thinking that if the 'procedure' is unavoidable I'll look into having it done there and recuperating on the beach with a few good books and lots of pina coladas.

I'd suggest taking at least 3 or 4 days off work! When I had mine done it was done as simple day surgery, I was done in the morning under local anaesthetic not general as it was the specialists recommendation and I walked out about 30 minutes after the procedure figuring that everything was just fine - which it was for about another 2 hours until the anaesthetic wore off.

The next few days were spent lying on the couch watching TV and wishing for the world to come to a sudden end, it kind of hurt a bit more than I had anticipated to tell you the truth. I had it done on a Friday because I had the weekend off, but I didn't end up going back to work until about the following Wednesday and at that time things were still a bit more "tender" than I would have liked. All up though about a week or so after the procedure everything was fine and back to normal and I have no regrets whatsoever.

My best advice to you is the advice given to me by my doctor when I asked him who he recommended to do the procedure. He told me that there was this person and it would cost this much and he was a new specialist, another person was a bit more expensive and had been around for a while and the third person was very very expensive but all he had done for the past 20 years was vasectomies and that kind of thing. He mentioned to me that it's one thing to get the best price when having your house painted but it's another thing entirely when the person you are paying to complete the job will at some point have a scalpel in one hand and your nuts in the other!

Ya, I'm 39 and we're obviously done having more. The thing that pushed me over the edge was the wife went off the pill, so it's either the glove or none!

My brother moved to Colorado this year, but says he is flying back to drive me to the doc just so he can gloat in my misery. You hear the horror stories of guys ending up with balls the size of grapefruits and it just makes me cringe

As for the other post and going with the most expensive, I'm in Canada and they're covered by medical, so it doesn't matter. I can go to a urologist but then it is they phone you the week before and give you a date and I'm the best man at at wedding and September is a very busy time at work for me, or I can go to a GP that has done a million of them (did my own doctor and I trust his opinion) and get to chose my own date.

That's what I figured. Have it done on a Wednesday before a long weekend and relax for five days. The nurse at the clinic looked at me like I was being a wimp when I suggested this and told me all I would need was a weekend to get over it. I should have asked her how long it took her to get over the last time someone sliced open her sack

Be sure to tell us how long it takes you to get back to golf after the operation. If I trusted doctors enough to let them handle it, and if there were doctors who would perform one for a 25-year old with no kids, I would seriously consider it.

While this doesn't help with your question directly, please view it as support from me. I wish you the best of health with regards to this procedure.

When I first read this heading I though you were talking about ebay and getting snipped out a bid for a product.

This is serious stuff you guys are talking about, my voice is getting higher just thinking about what you are discussing.

I know two couple and their wives had the operations and not the husbands, now think about that. now who wears the pants in the family?

That's "sniped". But that's what I thought when I read the title too. I just thought he misspelled it.

I had to spoon with myself after I read the whole post.

A friend of mine had it done during hockey season and played a game two days later.

I'll probably have it done this winter (I'm only 30, but we've decided) sometime when I can schedule it.

A vasectomy is no big deal. Any procedure where they let you drive yourself to and from it is a cake walk. That being said you do want to plan on taking it easy for at least a week after you have it done. I had mine done on a Friday afternoon and stayed in bed and rested for the weekend. I over did it back at work the following week, and while I didn't hurt myself I did experience some pain and swelling. I called my doctor and he told me to use ice in the evenings and sure enough that helped.

My advice is to take it easy for a week and don't be fooled if you're feeling good after a couple of days. Plan on minimizing the time you spend on your feet and limit lifting for at least a full week. Also ice can be your friend. Other than that I say go for it. It sure beats a condom and no little surprises.

I had it done in November 2006. I planned it based on golf season winding down and basketball season still a month away. I had it done on Fridat afternoon in the doctor's office. Worst part was the initial needle to the twins. After that it was nothing. I walked out in less than 30 minutes. I was on the couch with a bag of frozen peas that evening when we decided to go out to dinner. Dinner lead to a trip to WalMart. I started to get a little sore but nothing too bad. The next day was going to be college football on TV all day culminating with Michigan vs. Ohio State. Shortly before the game we end up going to WalMart again. God only knows why but I was bored and needed to get off the couch. We ran into friends and ended up at thier house for Thai food. I missed most of a classic game where OSU held on to beat the evil Blues. I hate OSU too, but not as much as Michigan. Anyway, Sunday was spent on the couch most of the day with my frozen peas. I spent a little too much time vertical Friday and Saturday. I was back at work on Monday. I run 2 health clubs and do a lot of personal training so my job does require some lifting. I was sore for a few more days but nothing that a few Advil couldn't fix.

More importantly I was back in "action" less than 72 hours after the procedure.

I'm in the same boat. Both I and my wife's OBGYN are trying to talk her into this . However, she's had three c-sections (the first was an emergency c-section), though, and I think I need to step up to the plate.

Seems like an interesting procedure and much less invasive than the traditional. However, I think you may be heading up to the plate. After 3 c-sections it may not be an easy sell.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
