Well, I'm pretty excited! I have been using my 3W off the tee because I just couldn't tame my driver. I have only been playing for about 2 months so I'm still learning.

So I go out yesterday and not having a good day. My drives were getting better but my second shot was killing my day. I get to hole 7 and I hit 2 off the tee that were long and beautiful, until they start slicing and end up out of bounds (course was empty behind me - twilight). So I tee up another one and again, long and beautiful but then it hooks into the jungle. Finally get one in the fairway and I play the hole out.

Then I get to 9. By this time, I'm frustrated. I just line up, take a couple of practice swings, and then belt one 250 yards right down the middle. I was so excited. I'm usually about 180-210. With my 3W I can get 190 straight. But using my driver, I just hope to find my ball.

Anyway - just had to post. 250 yards for was incredible. But it was more than just a moment - it showed me I could do it. Now I have to figure out to repeat it. I have worked and worked and worked and it seems everytime I go out, I figure something else out.

I kept hitting the ground - then I figured out 2 things that helped me. I was swaying my hips and it caused to come in too low. Then I noticed my weight was shifting to the outside of my right foot - not the inside. SO I paid attention to those two things all day and it helped.

Well, my wife didn't care as much as I did - so I thought I'd post here.

Congratulations! Isn't it awesome when you get that payoff for the work you put in? It took me alot longer than 2 months to hit it 250, way to go!

it definitely took me more than 2 months to catch one 250 as well. Definitely a huge congratulations.

And like you said, it shows that you can do it. And as a beginner, catching one 250 without having the best mechanics probably means that when things come together, you'll probably be able to tack on more yards.

I know exactly how you feel. When it comes to hitting a shot, not alot feels better than a piped drive down the middle.

I have a couple keys for distance that I try and use when I want to hit a big one.

On your downswing, turn your hips and pull down with your left arm. Always remember that your power comes from your core. The only reason that you use your arm is that everything must speed up to catch up to your hips. Whenever I do this right, I usually get a 280 drive down the middle..........

If you pull your left arm down to fast though and don't rotate the hips. You will snap hook it. If you are moving the hips to fast. You will block it right. Everything in unison though adds to a big reward.

Congrats..

My best drive so far is 294 (measured with SkyCaddie) I can average around 235/240 with the driver but can be very inconsistant so tend to play 200yds 3wood consistantly down the middle.

    • Option #2 because I'd add the condition that it's in a tournament. Because that'd mean I'd break par in a tournament. And I already have a hole in one.
    • Hole in one is nice, but those low rounds stick in my memory better. I have two holes in one (and a third on a pitch and putt course which I count as a half). I've shot in the 60s three times in the last 10 years or so and I remember each one pretty well. I'd take the low round.
    • Would You Rather #68: Would you rather make a hole-in-one on a perfectly struck shot, during a round where you otherwise played pretty poorly.  or  Would you rather play well all day and beat your personal best by let's say 3 strokes, but with no eagles.    I'd take option 2.   Although option 1 is always exciting, and rewarding. playing well all day is very exciting because I can also do the opposite.
    • I've got two of them.  So for me it depends. If I'm playing with friends and they know me. I'm taking the hole-in-one. Because they know my game anyway. Let's go for the awesome moment/bragging rights.  If I'm in a tournament I'm taking the low round, because I want to win.  If I'm playing with a bunch of strangers, and I just show up, and get paired up. I'm leaning toward taking the low round. I could leave them thinking I'm better than I am. Plus for me that would be a 73. ... That would be cool.
    • Hole in one is a lifetime achievement, so that.
