I went to the local Golf galaxy and was talking to one of the reps about getting fitted. He asked how tall I was (6'2''). He told me that at most all I would need Is probably 1/2'' in length to my club and it wouldnt be worth the $$ I would have to spend. Is this right???? Also, what goes into club fitting, I mean is it just hieght or is it also swing speed, ect...
I thought maybe someone in the N.E. Ohio could refer me to a good fitter. Thanks for any help and advise.

Accordng to Tom Wishon (I know I know he's not God) there are 20 + factors to consider when fitting clubs. But some I would consider is, height, wrist to floor, swing speed, swing weight, loft, shaft weight, shaft flex, shaft profile, angle of attack, swing plane, lie, .....well you get the idea.

Most importantly fitting is usually free! Most reputable fitting pros (not retail salesmen) will charge for the fitting but take the cost off of the purchase price of the clubs. Salesmen will tell you that the club they have IN STOCK fits you.

I took a trip to Golf Galaxy last week. I decided to pay the $20 for a putter fitting. After spending about 1/2 hour with me I walked out with custom fit Ping B60 putter. After 2 outings with it I have to say its the best feeling and performing putter I have played with. Due to the fact it was the proper length and bent properly so it hits flush, where I feel comfortable over the ball. My irons were custom fitted online, which isn't as good, but better then off the rack. I feel proper fitting is well worth the time and sometimes the money.

Short answer: very important and a must for golf equipment. As for Golf Galaxy, who did you talk to about getting fitted? One of the PGA staff? Member of their Fittingworks? Those would be the only people I would talk to about getting a fitting. They are the ones with the most knowledge. I would stay away from their sales reps.

While I was being fitted The guy showed me the difference a flat and an upright lie. He told me that I would need to go at least 3* upright and I proceeded to ask him if it really made that much difference. He handed me the same iron that was 2* flat and I consistently hit a hard fade. He then handed me one that was 3* upright and I found that slight draw that I was trying to hit. I already knew that I was going to be upright, but being fitted for shaft flex and length was great for my game as well. I hit my irons so well now, thanks to a good fitting. So, to answer the OP's question, it is very important!

Is Golf Galaxy any good for these kinds of things? There is one near me but I haven't bothered going in. Just presumed it was to golf stores what the Olive Garden or Outback is to restaurants...

Club fitting is rather important, as it allows a good swing to be rewarded with a good result. There are tons of things that go into it. Some taller people do add length to their shafts. My understanding is that some taller players will instead change the lie angle and use standard length shafts. But I'm not a clubfitter, so I could be way off on this (can I get confirmation or denial from someone?).

Shaft flex, and even the right shaft within the flex, is a big deal. Getting fit by a professional who has no interest in selling you a particular club is step one.

yes they are very good at what they do... they should have a pga pro and a golf tech. which both would be more than willing to help giving you tips and fitting you for clubs. and seeing golf galaxy is owned by dick's spoting goods they will have good prices. For example, we have a dick's sporting goods in nevada and they usually have about a 10% difference in prices to stand alone golf stores... just my input though
