when the club is in the vice whats the best way to allign the club and make sure its square

Make sure the face is straight up and down. Put a bubble level against the leading edge if you want. They're not square/flat, but you can eye it up to within a few degrees. Or, heck, just line it up against a brick or something in the background. You have to eye it up when you put the grip on anyway, and you can twist the grip slightly when it's still wet if you do it right away.

With putters you can be more precise, which is a good thing, since the putter grip isn't round.

Harry... I had a hard time understanding when the clubface is squared up

I have the exact same problem (or at least I'm paranoid that I'm going to foul it up). That's why I've always used the masking tape and marked a line that is in line with the alignment guide on the grip. I've done it since the clubs came from the factory so I've never had to "eyeball" or try to measure it. But if I forgot to mark it before I stripped the old grip off, my understanding is that it should be done as suggested above. ^^^^

Yep, I felt like an idiot when this happened to me. I had cheap solvent, and I guess because we got such a small bottle, I wasn't putting enough in. I went out and got one of the ones in the bottles that look like Windex, and just started spraying a lot in the grip...helped a lot, it slide on much easier (i was getting blisters on my hands trying to force them down)...
