hey, captain bold, i got the point, but MY point is that its not necessary in most cases. if the post you are quoting is right above your post, NOT NECESSARY.
if the quote is helpeful to your point, its necessary...but to quote something every time you post is just plain stupid. it is not necessary to quote every sentence in a post, especially if none of what you quote pertains to what you are talking about.
Contexually useful, yes...but always necessary, no. See, thats my point. i just summed up what i wanted from your post without making matters difficult. when you quote something, you still have to explain why you are quoting it and why it is relative to what you are saying (to quote correctly that is) and so you can save a lot of time, effort, and headaches by just paraphrasing what you need.

I never said quoting wasnt helpful, and i never meant for this to be an argument. to quote your original post here "Speak with immunity"...aparently a hypocritical statement...but either way this wasn't meant to be an erik bash and to me you are still a cool guy (your podcasts do a great job keeping me company while i pick the range, and being part of the podcast would be sweet)

overall, my point is this...quote when necessary, but dont quote the entire post if only one sentence pertains to what you are saying...and quote in moderation, because too many quotes is far too repetetetetetetetetetetive

. Anyway, the whole point of a good thread is that there's some cut-and-thrust of debate, which quotations facilitate because they allow for greater precision and efficiency in communication. But it's true about quotes, like any good thing they can be taken too far and require the use of discretion. And of course you have to be careful not to take someone out of context and inadvertently misrepresent them. Happens all the time. And what was your name again, Lefty2380? Nice to meet you Sir, Best, Charles S. Harmon III. (home course: Torrey Pines..... just don't ask me what I shoot on the South course ....) p.s. I just read your last post after writing this, and largely agree with the sentiments. There is such a thing as quote abuse, it's true, but I must see it less often than you.

this link and notice that you're automatically scrolled down to your post. You don't "see" the posts above. And in many cases, not quoting leaves someone to assume. Forcing people to assume is lame. You know what they say about assuming, but if you're forced to, by golly, the only ass in that situation is the guy who chose not to help you.

By paraphrasing I:

1) may misrepresent what was said 2) force everyone to re-read a summary of what was already said 3) spend more time typing By quoting I: 1) accurately represent what was said 2) clue people in that are following the discussion currently that they can skip the blue quoted block(s) 3) spend less time typing 4) help people who, like the link above, click immediately to "new posts" and don't automatically scroll backwards six posts. Agree to disagree, oui? Now let's move on.

Erik i dont care if you agree or disagree with what i said, its just that it bugs me and so i thought I'd bring it up. so agreeing to disagree is nothing seeing as i am not looking to agree with anything...its my opinion, and in large part a fact, that quotes are used far to often...but I'm tired of people telling me im wrong by saying that paraphrasing is a better alternative and whatnot, point is, this is a golf forum not a debate forum about forums...right?

Nice to meet you too. I strongly suspect there isn't so much space between the three of us on the quote business anyway, more a matter of degree.

Another thing I hate, and have been guilty of myself more than once early in my posting career (another forum), is the subtle use of irony such that the reader is left wondering which meaning is intended - straight, or in fact the opposite. I'm sensitive to it, because it's a game that I like to play in conversation sometimes, which has gotten me into trouble. I have learned to refrain absolutely from any sort of hidden meaning ("double-entendre") in a forum discussion, it's always a bad idea. I blame watching too much Monty Python as a youth, or just being brought up in the U.K. In a forum discussion, you gots to keep it straight - mustn't get cute or "clever".

"Agree to disagree" is a polite way of suggesting we all just drop it. You're not so good with the hints, it appears, so: Drop it.
