Change lie in Irons = change lie in hybrids, woods, and driver?

Just wondering, I was fitted when I bought my new irons, and they determined that my irons need to +2 degree UP change on the Lie Angle. Do my hybrids, woods, and driver need a lie angle change as well?

Nope, generally that doesn't matter. I'm 1 inch long and 2 degrees up and I haven't had any issues and everyone has told me the same thing.

What would matter more is length of the clubs, especially for a hybrid as the length of a hybrid can really vary. You'll get some 3 iron hybrids as short as 39 inches and some that are as long as 41. But they don't have to lie perfectly square on the ground because they aren't really made to do that anyways like irons are.

Thanks. Sounds like another fitting, for length, for the longer clubs.

Honestly, i wouldn't bother.

Most drivers are pretty much uniform at 45 inches or so and so you don't have to be fit for that. Hell I'm 6'5 and I'm seriously considering cutting mine down to 44 inches. The point I'm trying to make is lie angles really don't matter unless you are absurdly tall or short or have a very awkward setup.

As the loft gets lower, the less and less the lie angle matters. For instance, your 4 iron barely even needs to be bent. So once you get to your hybrid, 3 wood, driver, etc. it doesn't matter much.

Exactly. Most important in your wedges and believe it or not your putter.

i keep my wedges at a slightly less lie angle than irons.

i.e. irons are +1" longer, 3º upright. wedges are still +1" longer but 2º upright.

Okay, so i went to get fitted today at a driving range. Previously i went to get fitted in a store and was not satisfied. I'm even more confused now

What i've come to the conclusion is fitting is almost useless because you are essentially altering the equipment according to your swing, be it a swing full of errors or not. So if i go in an swing incorrectly generating a slice EVERY time with standard clubs, all they would have to do is make it more upright. After receiving upright clubs wouldn't this encourage the swing errors and maybe even amplify them?

Besides that, I was told by the store that I should get +.5 inch length and 1 degree upright. Problem is, he made the conclusion that i was 1 degree upright, and then after my comment about how i felt that my clubs were too short, he then said that i should also add half an inch.

I went to the driving range to get fitted and they said i just need 1 degree upright. So i'm thinking if i lengthen the club by a half inch, i should be able to use standard lie right? and if i increase to upright 1 degree, I should be able to use standard lenght right?

THis is extremely confusing and i just want to be able to get the clubs that will improve and encourage good swinging the most.

Personally, I really want to get these clubs (Mizuno mp 57's) so i've decided to stick with standard lenght and 1 degree upright so that I can maintain control over my irons instead of increasing the length which may give me more distance but less control..

anyone else as confused about fitting as I am? or are these adjustments that they make to these clubs so minute that they really don't encourage bad habits and i'm just being paranoid?

Thanks for the input

Don't think its that confusing. I went to a really famous well-known club fitter when I bought my mizunos, and he fit me at +1/2 inch and 2 degrees upright. Just kept adjusting them until I was hitting them perfectly in the middle of the sole.

Okay, but doesn't the fact that you had to "adjust" mean that the fitting was useless? In other words, couldn't you just have stuck with standard clubs and adjusted that way?

I've come to the conclusion that unless you're extremely tall (and therefore need longer clubs) or unless you have an extremely low handicap, a club fitting is not so important... isn't the whole point of a club fitting so you don't need to adjust?

No two swings are alike. The whole point to a fitting is to have the clubs match your swing.

So, the point is to match the fitting to your unique swing, so if your swing changes, then the fitting results should change as well.

The question being implied in this thread was whether one should work on the right swing for the person first, and then get fitted, or get fitted first for the swing that they have, and then have the clubs tweaked over time based on swing changes (presumably, due to swing improvements made with practice, lessons, etc.). Stated another way - should a beginner / high handicapper first and foremost work on the proper swing for him/her first before being fitted? Chicken or Egg?
