Awesome story, can't wait for the time in my life when I have to ask permission to do anything with the money I make!!

It will happen, don't worry!

Ask for multiple receipts. The real one for insurance purposes, and another for your significant other. Just say a driver costs $300, get a receipt for $40 and make sure s/he sees it. Then you say - it's amazing - some people actually pay 80 or 90 dollars for golf clubs!!! And shake yor head as if even you think that that's ridiculous.

first of all... great story, but I can't believe you didn't try the Adams XTD a3 hybrid-fw it felt pretty damned good to me a few weeks ago and is running about $160 most places. I am also in the market for a 3w... so this was fun to read.

Just a question: how does one know how well he is hitting the club when indoors hitting into a net?

yeah... I absolutely have to see ballflight or no deal.

I went to Costco for a hotdog and came out with a hotdog and a 3 wood. The craving for a hotdog cost me $155.

awesome... that's why I don't go to Costco... no golf club free samples.

Thanks for all the great responses.

yeah... I'm thinking the shaft on my 3w is too light at only 65 grams and that might be part of my problem.... well, that and I suck.

Sorry, I missed this.. The net is about 40-60 feet away from the box. You certainly don't get an exact feel for the hit, but it felt good enough at the time. With Golfsmiths 90/90 program, if i doesn't work out I end up "renting" the club for three months for $17. I'm OK with that.

Hey hey hey.. Let's get some clarification here. Please note that nowhere in my story did I call the spousal unit and ask if I could buy the club. I bought it and figured out how to creatively explain it later. I don't put on a skirt and ask permission. Now she has a choice.. She can call me on it or go buy some over priced shoes and know that I'll keep my yap shut and pretend not to notice them come in the door as I play Tiger 09. A good marriage is all about compromise!

I was looking for something with a tall face. I know it sounds silly now, but it looked too thin to me.. And then it was closing time.. And then I was buying....

Update:

Took this bad boy out today and it saw some action. I'd say 3-4 quality shots with it. With my slice I ended up adding some tape weight to the inside and my final two hits were 220-240 right down the center. Good lauch angle as well.

So far so good. *knocking on every piece of wood within distance*.

For those of you who care to read my posts you'll remember I needed a 3 wood and found my old TM 3W Draw in the garage. I spent the $10 and re-griped it, ready for my first round with a 3 wood in over a year tomorrow. It was like X-Mas all over again!

I bought my Cobra F Speed on a whim because it was down to $299 and I made the comment of how much today. That netted me an additional 10% off. I really needed it anyway because I had bought my setup used from my neighbor (Callaway BB and X-14 irons/wedges). 6 months later, bought my current set up. Wife didn't complain too much. I was going off to war, that is!

I have a compulsion to buy new equipment, and it seems about as hard to break as quitting smoking. I'm always checking out the new irons and drivers, futzing around with different wedges, and puttering with putters. I gave my brother-in-law a driver and some woods/hybrids last month just to clear out the closet clutter, but I've already bought new ones. I keep mixing and matching, shaking up my bag, looking for the good-luck combo that will help me break 80. My closet is complete chaos, far worse than the kids' Barbie-strewn hideaways.

My wife thinks I'm crazy; she's just glad I'm obsessed with golf instead of hookers and booze. I do occasionally catch an earful when the CC bill comes in, but my wife turns the tables on me by going shoe shopping. If you thought clubs were expensive, check out manolo blahniks -- apparently every self-respecting woman needs 5 or 6 pair just to be able to compete with Ms. Jones at the coffee shop.

Hearing your story reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Homer buys the Mr. Plow truck because the salesman keeps asking him if his wife whips him and keeps making a whipping sound until he cracks and buys the truck.

I have an arrangement with my wife: I have a 250$ golf money set up in our budget. Each month, I get 250$ to spend on whatever I want, no questions asked. If I don't spend it, it banks and I can use it another month (like this month when I custom ordered my AP2 irons). She does the same on clothes, shoes, etc. We never argue that way, it's the path of least resistance.
