R7 v.s. X-20 irons

I've hit both twice at Golfsmith and I'm in a dead heat. Both with regular flex steel shafts, and there are different things I like about each set.

I presently play a set of Top-Flite irons that I won at an outing two years ago. I've gotten much more serious about my game this year and have steadily improved, but I'd like to step up to a nice set of irons. I reached my goal of getting into the 80's with my old gear and its time to send them off.

Any opinions, things to avoid. Similar clubs to look at?

X-20's are a great choice. I really liked them when I demo'd them. Unfortunately, I didn't have the funds at the time.

Both are winners. And you can't go wrong with either IMHO.

If after hitting them and considering how each set up, look, and feel you're still deadlocked then the "only" thing I have to say about which to purchase would be:

Callaway has a fantastic trade-in trade-up program. When you're hdcp is in single digits and you're ready to upgrade, then you'll get a great price for you're trade in to forged or tour's. No need to worry about selling them to a buddy or the Pro Shop.

Good luck on your choice and I'm sure you'll be chipping away at that hdcp with either.

If, by chance you're not absolutely set on them, you'd do yourself a disfavor if you didn't try the mizuno's. You can find practically "brand new" set's on Ebay for $450-$500. I got mine for $465 and they were advertised as "hit only once". When I got them there wasn't a single ball mark or scuff on them, 100% better looking then the demo clubs I tried out at the Pro shop. If you're not into Ebay, the MP-57's sell for the same price as the R7's and X-20's new. With a 15 hdcp you should be able to smack them around nicely.

I have the Callaway X20s and love them as well.

Do a search for Callaway Customer Service if you want a great reason to choose Callaway. They replaced the shaft on a 7 iron that broke when I threw it for free, with no shipping cost either way, with no other questions. I simply told them it was broken and that I broke it and they sent me a shipping label.

If the feel is equivalent for you, then you have to go with Customer Service.

I have the X-20s because I wanted to graduate from my Big Bertha irons, and when I went to the golf shop to demo new irons (practically all the game improvement irons) the X-20 had the familiar appearance when I would aproach the ball. Had to get use to the lighter head weight, but overall I was able to utlize them immeadiately.

That is one thing I noticed with both sets of irons over my current model. The weight is significantly different and as a result my swing feels faster, I need to get that out of my head and work the lag a bit. The X-20's are looking better and better to me, especially given the good marks their service department has received here.

It's hard to go wrong with the X-20. I usually play my brother-in-law's X-14 and when I upgrade my own irons, will look at the X-20.

I played a set of X-18's over the weekend. They are a friends that has since moved into a X-Forged set. He's trying to pawn them off on me for $300 which I feel is strong, but I wasn't about to turn down the chance to take them for a test drive.

I loved having a 3i and 4i in the bag, and I really liked the look of the club. I know its crazy, its cosmetics, it means nothing......but I do feel it gave me this weird confident feeling in the club. Almost like they would make me play better than I normally do, just on the basis of how they looked. Incidentally they did, I shot a season low 81, and I'm officially left scratching my head now. Because I didn't even take a wood with me. I tee'd off with the 3i and did it on purpose so that I hit all of the irons both off the tee and the fairway. Apparently accuracy can make up for longer shots that land in the rough.



I'm really gonna take my time on this purchase as I don't want to buy the wrong clubs as I've seen so many people do.

$300 is a good price if it is a full set in decent condition.

Check Callaway preowned.com to see what they would cost otherwise. I love the X-18, I am thinking of upgrading tothe X-20 maybe.

This is going to be that kind of decision that haunts me all winter. If I choose the Callaway clubs I'll have to ebay my Taylor Made bag and get a Callaway to calm my golf ho OCD.

To actually do the trade-in you add in the clubs you want to trade on a big check list, callaway gives you a credit, and then you select or build your new clubs on the site. It's pretty easy and the trade in prices are fair.

the X-22's should be out very soon, at least in my area. i saw a Callaway club try-out session with Ernie Els and Rocco Mediate on the Golf Channel. they both LOVED the X-22's.(good reviews on the FT-iq as well)
