If you are buying new, I'm pretty sure you can custom order from several manufacturers.

im just kinda lookin at either the taylormade r7 tp or the cgb irons

id like to just be able to get like 5,6,7 and then get the 8,9 another time, i really need to get a new set of irons, i have dunlops now, i play fairly well with thim shootin low 80 rounds but i cant shell out all the money for a full set of decent irons

and i know i wont use the 3 and 4 irons lol never have, i just cant hit them straight but the 5 i nail that straight everytime i dont know why its so different between the 4 but it just is, and i have hybrids so 3 and 4 dont mean muich to me really,

Go to Golfsmith.com and look in the margin on the left. Click on the "golf clubs - custom fit" option. You can do a pseudo online fitting, or if you know what you want go to the "proceed to order" option. Then you can click on the individual irons you want to order. Good luck!

*also you can use this option to see what shafts and grips are available for custom order and to request a specific length and lie.

another thing is to look at custom fitters. KZG, hireko, maltby are all component type clubs, and are well respected. These are not clone clubs, and they sell individually.

This is what I did when I bought my KZGs. I was able to upgrade the shafts, get fitted, and get only the clubs I wanted (5-PW). The cost was acceptable.

As for cost effective, most of the irons sold on Golfsmith are no more than $5 per higher than bought in a set, if there is any difference at all.

I buy all my clubs from them. You can probably get individual irons for the same price as the average club price in a full set, maybe less.

But CALL them. Do not rely on the website.

Do a search for "Discount Dan's" on any golf message board and you'll find nothing but satisfied buyers.

Dan retired last year, but sold the business to one of his former employees, Kevin. From everything I've heard (and the orders I've place since then), Kevin and his staff are running the business the same way Dan did. (FYI: Dan would take the phone orders himself. But if you got him on the phone, you better be prepared to have a thoroughly enjoyable talk about golf in addition to placing your order. He made it feel like your local store.)
