Ok, so i'm a student but i'm trying to acquire a nice set of golf clubs as golfing is one of my favorite passtimes during the summer.

I had a northwestern set, ceramic matrix i believe they were called. They had graphite shafts and I enjoyed them quite well, but I thought it was time for an upgrade.

This summer I got a cleveland hibore xls 9.5 tour driver and a set of tommy armour 855 silverback cm irons (3-pw). Last christmas I got a tommy armour 60 degree wedge as well as a yonex v mass 02 putter.

I love the driver and irons, as well as the wedges. I used to shoot mid to high 50's but I find myself getting under 50 consistently now. I'd like to get to the low 90's but I find myself shooting mid to high.

I hit the new irons fantastically as well as the wedge and driver. I feel like i've got all my distances covered iron wise as I can hit my long irons fairly consistently. My putting has improved to where i'm 2 - 3 putting most of the time with my putter.

I still play the 5 wood from my northwestern set as I don't like the 3 and I can hit the 5 a long way off the tee but shit off the grass. I was wondering if a 17 degree hybrid would remedy this and allow me to make a much longer distance fairway shot?

I've also been looking at new putters......i like the blade style but am looking at trying a few soon. My friend has yes tracy II that i'm interested in trying as well as a ping anser. I was wondering what the odyessey blades are like cause it seems like you can get them for reasonably cheap on ebay.

Instead of spending money on a new set of clubs to replace a set that you obviously seem to like, take your current set along to a clubfitter and get them fitted to suit you. That'll make a bigger difference to your game than replacing what you currently have with something similar that still wasn't made to suit you.

As for putters, just try as many as you can and try them outside on a real green not in a store on carpet as it makes a big difference. Next time when you are out on the course and you see someone with a putter you don't mind the look of just ask them if you can have a putt with it, in most cases they'll say yes. Here's the added bonus of trying out someone else's putter, if they are struggling with it and you like it offer them $50 or swap them yours or whatever you think is fair. You'll be surprised what people say will yes to after a couple of three putts green in a row!

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
