I was watching teaching lessons on the Golf Channel with Woody Austin and he was showing his putting grip with his hands very close together almost like praying and I tried it yesterday on the course and had only 26 putts during the round and shot 2 over.

The one thing that I noticed immediately was the my putting stroke was simple and wrist free. This putting grip took my wrist out and I was making my putts saving par with 10 one putts and got up and down 8 out of 11 attempt or 70% of the time.

The grip is similar to praying and the left palm is flat and square with the target the right hand is also square and the back of the hand is facing away from the target. I hold the handle of the putter grip similar to the iron grip on the pad of my hand and I keep my left hand slightly lower than my right hand because I have putted left hand low but you can either have both hands equal or right hand slightly low also.

I made several long putts to save par and can't wait to get back on the course again. When I was watching the LPGA I noticed Lorena Ochoa was using a similar putting grip with her hands very close together similar to what I changed my putting grip too.

This grip left ackward at first but once I starting making the putts it became more natural.

Sounds interesting... can you try and find a pic for me? im currently using the same type of grip i use with my other clubs, with the first finger on my left hand, and the pinkie finger of my right hand, interlocking. However, I want to try some different techniques with my putting.

I will have to give that a shot, my putting has been terrible lately.

Keep it on the short grass.

ks8829 what kind of grip do you have on your putter. is it a small or a oversize?

interesting that you ask me, our greens have been recently aerated and I was forceds to use my back up putter with an slight over size grip and I have yet to try this new putting grip with my usual putter that has a regular size grip.

I also believe that it's a combination of the new putting grip, shoulder or one piece stroke motion and distance control that is giving me added confidence in my putting.

I played my second round with the new putting grip and had another round of 26 putts. 10 on the front nine and 16 on the back nine, If I was chipping better I could have lowered that number on the back nine. I was 1 of 6 up and down on the back nine vs 5 of 6 on the front nine.

I've used the prayer style for a long time now. I'm very satisfied with it and my putting is regarded as very good. But, in terms of impact on putting performance, I think grip has very little to do with it.

I used to use an oversized grip, but I found that it made me change the face angle when I didn't want to. I think just because it was large, small movements in my hands made big changes in the face angle. So, I ditched it for a regular circumference grip.

i might have to give this a try next time im at the practice green. i need to find something to give me a spark with my putting. my last 9 i had 18 putts (YIKES!) and i would like to shave about 3 or 4 putts off of that on my next 9 holes.

thanks for the technique and the video!

Holy hell, has this putter grip worked wonders for me. I've been putting TERRIBLY all season (3-putts & 4-putts were not uncommon in my rounds).

I played 9-holes today and only made 15 putts (which for me is incredible), and I sank a 30-foot birdie putt.

Thanks so much for bringing this style to my attention. This grip feels so much more solid to me than the more conventional style that I was using before.

If you need to get up and down so much, I wouldn't worry so much about the putting or putting grip and spend more time on your iron play to actually hit the green.
