This is about a month and a half in to golf college.

What my faults are:
Straight right leg at impact
Wrists flick through impact, as a result of the straight right leg

How I intend to fix this:
Improving hip rotation on the back swing, you can probably see that my left hip almost moves towards the target on the backswing.
Make sure through impact I focus on stopping the hands from flicking, the feeling is that I am trying to hit a fade, holding the face open through impact.

Notes:
I noticed that (although it was freezing cold when the videos were filmed) my set up seems almost 'cramped' with my shoulders very shut to the target, in my next practise session this is something I will pay particular attention too.

Any comments/input will be greatly appreciated.

I would love to see you upload these to Swing Academy. You may straighten the back knee a tad. Hard to see with clothes you are wearing. I don't see much regarding your hip rotation. Looks pretty good to me. Way better than the average golfer. You do a good job of keeping the back foot on the ground while still getting some hip rotation. Without some analysis tools I would hesitate to say much else.

Swing looks great to me. On plane and solid through the positions.

Watching your vid reminded me that a practice swing is a good thing for me to work back into my routine.

I don't see any of the arthritic knee or bad wrist pain manuevers that are so present in my own swing....makes me jealous.

Nice swing man. It reminds me of Martin Kaymers swing alot. I can't see anything obviously wrong with it. Its better than mine, I do know that much... lol.

Hmm.... what's wrong with your ball flight? Are you trying to hit the ball better with straighter ball flight? You want to be more consistent? Or your just want to have a better looking swing?

Good Luck with College golf by the way.

Definitely want to improve consistency, the only problem with my ball flight is the amount it varies from shot to shot.

Obviously I don't hit the ball far enough either, which I'm hoping is something I will grow in to (have always been a late developer size wise).

Man... looks good. Just keep trying to get your practice swing to match the full swing as much as possible. Your swing looks really stable. Me and my whippy wrists are envious.

As far as the consistency goes, what kind of swing trigger are you using? I couldn't spot anything (hand press, forward press, head turn, forward bump, foot step, knee push, etc). Might want to consider finding one and putting it into your swing. That will help every swing start feeling the same and hopefully migrate into every ball flying about the same.

All the greats had a swing trigger. None started from a pure stationary position. The triggers of modern pros are very difficult to spot, as it's more of a feel thing than a big movement. Constant motion, back and through.

I suppose my trigger is just generally going through my routine, and repeating the same routine time and time again.

My main problem in competition is confidence, I will get very nervous about where the balls going, and as a result put very poor swings on the ball where I try and steer the ball, through practise this is something I am trying to eliminate!.

I would definitely suggest finding an actual "swing trigger" to start the motion of the swing.

Hogan had a slight forward body press.

Lee Trevino had his three steps.

Nicklaus had the stationary press and head turn.

Sam Snead had the forward press.

Byron Nelson had the forward body press with lagging clubhead takeaway.

Gary Player kicks in his right knee.

Harvey Penick suggested feeling like you are swinging a bucket of water. You wouldn't start straight back. A little swing forward is needed to set things in motion.

Jim McClean suggests raising and lowering the right heel.

Brian Manzella suggests stepping on the right foot.

The idea is to have a conscious, easily repeatable, small motion to set the feel of the swing into motion. It promotes smoothness, a consistent tempo, and a repeating swing form. Makes the swing itself feel very automatic.

Mine is a feeling of counting 123, 123, 123. So really a very slight forward body press. I rebound off that into the backswing.

My swing is always in motion; I'm just catching the next wave.

You self-diagnosed very well concerning the left hip going forward on the back swing. I like to see a straighter body line on the left side (a line leaning left) and to get this you need to load into the inside of the right foot while keeping the right leg flexed and ready to shove off. My guess is the left hip "bump" forward during the backswing is giving you a little power leak you could fix with a more conventional lower body. Were you aiming at the tree? Parallel left is always a good idea. Pretty good looking swing overall, but there is more power to be gained.

For more consistency, I also do 123 counting. As I finished counting 2 my club has paused at the top. When I count 3, I pull down with the same speed. This make me swing using the same tempo everytime, thus more consistency.

And one more thing. Golf is a mental and physical game. As far as I see, you have a pretty good swing. Just need to build more confident in yourself which is we all really need in order to play this game well.

You make me think of one of my friends who play really good golf, but hit a bad shot almost everytime he sees the water.

This is what I do. I don't really care what is in front of me. I want the ball to go right there, and it's going there. Everytime I setup, look at the ball, there's nothing else on this world except myself and the golf ball. This make no different between my practices and competitions.

I know it hard to do. There's some nerve playing in a tournament, and you might have hundreds people looking at you. But try to forget everything, pick the target, pick the right club, make a right setup, commit to the shot, there's only you and the ball everytime.

You have worked really hard to get to this point. Trust and believe in yourself :)

    • I can see how some people might not think or know it is how they are pushing against the ground that causes your hips to spin in a certain way. It makes sense when he describes torque. Also, that PGA Tour average is like 2x more push with the left leg than the right leg.  Yea, if someone is very right side dominant, or just has a weakness in their left leg, they could struggle with early extension no matter how they try to keep the tush back. Even if you feel your left leg extend, if the direction of the force is not pushing the hip back and up behind you, it can push your leg back and away from the target more, which is not ideal.  Pending muscle weaknesses and mobility, I almost feel like early extension is solved at this point.
