the other thread inspired me to ask this question... sherlockian and samauraimac and some other alabamians on this board know which hole im talking about here...

the #14 hole at joe wheeler state park's golf course in rogersville alabamma..

heres the scenario..its a par 3, 192 yards to the front of the green(white tees) to an elevated green.. id say maybe 30 ft above the line from the teebox..

the tennessee river guards the front of the green.. you have to carry the ball at least 180 yards to clear the water...

there are trees lining the entire right side of the hole.. the safest shot is to hit left of the bunker and hope it rolls down onto the green...

you have to have some air under the ball to reach the elevated green.. the slope is so steep that if you hit the mound it will roll back into the water...

how would you play this??

i used to just hit a 5 iron and try to launch it high and hope it clears the water and hits the green but im only lucky 50% of the time... the greens elevation makes it diffcult to play a long iron and my short irons wont reach it.

5 wood sails too far and into the stream behind the green...

you cant really hit a short shot and try to carry it over the river with your 2nd shot on here.. because the red tees are directly at the bottom of the hill right before you get to the water.. and its too cold out here nowadays to come short of the red tees (red tees are 130 yards to front of the green)

forgot to add.. the trees channel the wind directly into your face.. so 80% of the time you are playing into the wind

Play that shot with a swing and a prayer...

Sounds like a perfect shot of a hybrid, which will come in higher and thus softer, but that's one of those holes that was obviously not designed with the average golfer in mind. I bet it sometimes takes a foursome forever to get past that hole. I would hope there is at least a good drop zone on the green side somewhere.

if it was me i'd take my 200 club and swing harder than normal. For me the harder I swing the higher the ball goes. You could also play a cut shot that will land softer.

Here's what I'd do... I'd look up my ESC max strokes for the hole, and just go ahead and write that down. Then I'd stroll casually to the next tee and hope no one was watching.

In the bag:

Hope the 5I carries, or take a soft 5W and over shoot, but not enough to get it in the stream. Otherwise, writting the max sounds good.

I have played a hole similar to this, the carry was just over 190yards, but the green was not elevated. I normally hit a 5W and try to pop it up a little more and hope that you dont overshoot the hole by 20 yards.

I've played this hole before, and I remember it. Here's how I played it:

If the 5w doesn't hold the green have you tried teeing it up a little high to get it to pop up a bit?

Hi,
I do not know the hole at all. However here is what I do when I am in between distances with certain clubs...

It sounds like you are inbetween using a 5 wood for the distance and a iron with enough loft that will give you enough height to get up to the elevated green.

I would suggest taking some distance off your 5 wood by:

- playing it more off your front foot to get more height
- choking down on the grip so that it has the same length as you five iron

good luck!
