I went to a fitter on Saturday, “The Complete Golfer” in White Plains, New York. The service and knowledge level was impeccable and I sincerely recommend it to everybody on this board.

I shoot 100 as of now. I am playing with

•Taylor Made RAC OS Irons- Regular Shaft
•Taylor Made Rescue Dual 3 & 5: Regular Shaft
•Calloway 11 Degree Driver – Regular Shaft

I am right handed and my swing has become pretty consistent. However, I push a lot of balls out to the right.

The fitter took several tests, on several machines, measuring everything from Swing Speed to ball speed, spin, etc etc…

His suggestion was this:

•Change the shaft from “Regular” to Stiff” on the driver and the Rescue Clubs
•Build me a custom 4 Wood

And then either:

•Re-shaft all of the irons to stiff and calibrate the clubs to match my 7 iron(which I hit the best)

Or

•A new set of Calloway X22’s

Question:

Should I be nervous about the change?
I don’t love the “Wide Sole” of the Taylor Made Irons, so changing the irons is an attractive idea…but are the club faces on the X22’s smaller than on the TM Racs?
Should I go with the re-shaft or the new set or X22’s?
I hit my 5 Hybrid the best of any club…I am really nervous about screwing the club, but I think I just need to get over that. Can somebody put me at ease?

Thanks in advance.

I am sure you realize a good answer to your question is really impossible over the internet as we are not privy to the fitters specs or your game. My advice would be to either get one demo club and play with that to see if works or get the proverbial second opinion from another club fitter. You have a great one in Grenwich, CT whom I have visited.

Reshafting your irons would definitely be cheaper than buying new, but in the end this is a decision you would need to make based on whether you 'want' to buy new irons and whether you can afford to. As for the X-22's, they are not that much different than the TM RAC OS irons as far as size. I'm curious - did the fitter recommend this specific model and if so, why? If purchasing new is your decision, then I would recommend you find a location where you can see and try several new models and find the ones you like. Hopefully they have a professional fitter who can then take your specs plus your preferences and get the right model and setup for you.

For the rescue clubs, reshafting can also be done fairly easily and would not be that expensive (depending on brand and model of shaft chosen), but be careful because a 'stiff' shaft is not always the same thing in all brands/models.

As 'wachesawgolfer' says, a second opinion might be a good idea. I at least think you should try to visit a retail store what also does professional fitting to see what you like and if you find what you like then get fit with the actual clubs and/or shafts while there. Golfsmith, Golf Galaxy and Edwin Watts are all 'big box' stores that would fit this description (of course there are many many others as well).

The right equipment that is fit correctly for you will help you improve your game, psychologically as well as physically.

You went to the best place to get fitted. I went there, too and their suggestions were spot on.

FWIW, If you are happy with your irons, I would recommend that you change your shafts. Which shaft type did they recommend?

As for your Hybrid, why worry? You don't feel you'll hit it even better with their recommendation?

I would also have them build you the 4W. They built my driver and have zero complaints. They will make sure its the right size and it is worth the extra money to have it pured.

Also, if for whatever reason you are unhappy about their pricing, you can always purchase the shafts, elsewhere, and have them do the work.
