Ah winter time golf... even if it is 65 degrees. The grass turns brown, the fairways harden up, and those 450 yard par fours become driver--sand wedge, and if you are not careful, you might think you can hit it long.

Seriously though, my regular course's bent grass green become super fast and smooth as glass, and I enjoy the challenge of really quick putts. Most of the time now, any putt over 10 feet is something you visualize as going in from the side of the hole (not the front) as it rolls out and makes a sharp turn down slope. It really is a chess game of imagination.

I think winter time can make one delusional about their driver length -- even the up hill shots hit and roll foward a good ways.

don't forget... there is also no or very little roungh, and it isn't nealry as hard to muscle through. So the course is less penal in that sense, but you CAN get in more touble rolling into water or other areas. It is definately different playing this time of year.

It can be very different, I agree. I think it is hard to score in winter time, and some of those hard tight lies around the green make you want to pull out the putter and try things you would not do in the summertime. And flyers out of brown grass seem to be nuclear. Pull hooks never seem to stop -- they are death.

You are clearly on to something about lay up shots near water... I hit a club less now at least (and if it is downhill, oh my be careful.) On the other hand, a punch shot under a tree limb that would never bounce onto the green normally will sometimes runs to the back of the green. On some greens with good slopes, I've hit, gotten in the golf cart, driven up, got out... and my ball is still trickling down the fall line, even with no wind.

I wish I had such a problem. Right now all the courses around here are buried under 8" of snow...
