a few swings with the R9

There was a Taylor Made rep at the range yesterday showing off the new gear, and got to take a couple of swings the new r9 and the new rescue. the rescue was whatever in my opinion, but the r9 is pretty freaking sweet...he also showed how you can adjust the loft and lie, which really is quick and simple. I was impressed. Apparently there is only one shaft option for the regular r9, but TP version will have like 9 custom shaft options...can't wait till march......

What did you think of the head shape? From the photos I've seen, it looks a little bit too much like the CGB for my tastes. I'm definitely more of a traditionalist. The square and triangle stuff just doesn't look right to me.

I think it looks pretty traditional from all the pictures I have seen. Definitely more traditional than the r7 Limited, Tour Burner. It looks only slightly triangular.

wasn't anything ridiculous...but then again i don't usually have problems adjusting to different heads, so long as it is not square

i hit one, when i went to florida.... they are fairly traditional. I really like how you can change everything.... I am now a believer....

I was initially turned off by the whole change around the club thing but the more I think about it, the more I want to get it. Who knows how my swing may glitch and change since I don't get to practice and compete on a schedule. Plus, I get to try all these different face angles and such which seems pretty cool. maybe I need a more open face and I can learn to play a fade, or maybe I want to draw all my drives one day. Whatever, it just seems like it can satisfy a lot of equipment curiousity while still being a great club.

I got to hit the r9 last weekend as well. The look was nothing to worry about, and the ball flight was awesome. I was hitting it set at 1 degree open. The only concern I had was the adjustment. It seemed a little gimmicky to me, but I definitely couldn’t argue with the results.

I ended up going with the 909. The 909 had a little higher ball flight for one but I loved the feel. That being said, I think anyone that picks up an r9 could do a lot worse.

Isn't it better just to go and get fit for optimal head shaft combination and stick with it rather than the r9 route? Well I am sure there will be some who would disagree but just stating my personal opinion.

From my past experience with adjustable clubs like r7 425 and MP-600, I would just set it at my preference and never change the setting till I sold it... Usually the optimal setting for me was the neutral setup so the adjustability kind of defeated it's own purpose...

while i do agree that this is an awesome club, i feel as though for the average golfer there is now so much he has to worry about. Before it was just the weights, no its lie and loft. I think the average joe is going to get confused and get mad when he isn't getting the results he wants because he wants the club to correct what ever swing flaw he currently is dealing with

I think make the loft adjustable is wonderful.

Being a beginner, I do not really know what is the best loft for me on the driver.
I have bought now a 11*, then a 9.5* and still dont know which is better. Everybody tells me more loft is better, but then I somehow get better results with 9.5*

And of course I do not have the same driver with the same shaft twice. So it is really hard to compare the impact of different lofts on a given day with my current swing.
So being able to change the loft would help me lots to figure out what is good for me.

Changing the lie angle on a 46" driver does not make too much sense to me, though.

I do love the idea of being able to make adjustments, but I learned from my SuperQuad that just because I can, it doesn't mean I will.

In reality, time is probably better spent working on developing a more consistent swing, and consequently a more consistent ball flight; instead of relying on club adjustments to tweak whatever might be wrong on a given day.

Still, I'm an absolute gear *****, and mostly a TaylorMade driver guy, so I may throw common sense and logic to the wind, and pick up an R9 anyway.
