Looking at my stats over the last 30 rounds or so, I don't know if I have one area that stands out as great and one as awful. Each is just "ok and getting better." I hit a lot of fairways, but I'm not hitting the ball solidly. My short irons have been rapidly improving, but they're still just ok. If I had to pick a strong point, I'd probably pick putting, especially lately. Throw out one bad round in my last ten and I'm averaging about 31 putts per round, which is decent (better than you would expect for my 16 handicap). Weakness, I guess, would be sand play. My home course isn't heavily bunkered, and there isn't any place around to practice my bunker play. If I had to pick one area to work on, sand play would be it.

I live in College Station (will be here until July or August), play most of my golf at the Texas A&M; golf course ($58/month as a grad student for all I can play), but stray over towards Conroe and Houston on occasion (best golf course outside of Bryan/College Station I've played lately is Woodforest at Fish Kill, a Steve Elkington design right outside of Conroe).

Where do you play?

Best, 7 iron through putter, including a sand and lob wedge. Worst part, in order, fairway woods, driver, long irons...I don't have any hybrids.

The best part of my game usually occurs from 160 in. My absolute weakness is driving the ball consistently.

I'd say that the best for me is with the driver. I just never had difficulty driving well , even when i try to work the ball it works pretty well most of the time. I'm not long by todays standarts , i'm just hitting fairways a lot. Thing is ...I'm a lame putter , like...really bad!

My driving is consistently the best part of my game - I tend to hit a lot of fairways and longer than most players I play with.

The worst part is from the drive in - I have never been one to hit a lot of GIR, although since latest swing change it's getting better. Short game is OK, but not good enough and my putter, which 2 years ago would have rivaled my driving for best part of my game, has fallen apart as I've had way too many 3 putts (or 2 putts from really close).

For the last several years, I'll typically hit 10+ FIR with only 3-5 GIR and around 30 putts. This year I want to get GIRs up to around 9-10 while keeping putts about the same or slightly better. I made swing change for irons late last fall and was hitting around 10-11 GIR during those rounds so I know it's possible. However, my putting fell off a little as I had a few rounds with 35-37 putts. Both numbers (GIR and Putts) are a little skewed by course conditions which were typical late fall/early winter midwest conditions. Lag putting and approaches are going to be my major focus once I can get back on the course for a few rounds (due to weather I haven't played since the first weekend of January).

I have only played golf for one year. For the first half of the year i could drive and hit my irons really good but had zero short game/ putting. Then i learned how to putt and chip but forgot how hit my driver or irons.

Oh well, hopefully i can put them together in 2009.

approach shots are far and away my weakest point. damned if i can hit more than five or six greens in any given round.

i think my putting and fairway hits tie up with each other for best. i can usually hit approximately 3/4 of the fairways, and it's rare that i have to take more than two putts to hole out. my chipping is mediocre.

Though no part of game game is really good, my short-iron play is probably at the top. The worst is my long irons.

Worst. Fairway woods. I used to hit them well when i was a kid, but i have MS and it made me blind in my left eye. Most fairway woods look closed when i set up, because i only see the leading edge with the back eye. (Right) So, i can't get comfortable over them. But, i just got a 16 hybrid to see if it would help. We had a REALLY warm day here in Chicago yesterday so i went to the range. I think i made a good purchase.

Best is probably my mid-irons. I hit my 5, 6, & 7 particularly well for 4 handicap. Really straight and very consistent trajectory.

I'm pretty good with the flatstick, too.

I'm extremely "unfussy" about balls. I'll play anything white and round!  I''ll even play the colors i find.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
