I believe Ionomer is the generally used as a casing. Urethane and Surlyn are used for covers. Urethane has a much softer feel and spins a lot more. Surlyn is harder and gives you less spin and longer distance. If you have trouble slicing/hooking, a Surlyn covered ball may work better for you. The Urethane will give more spin and stop power around the green.

To compare, a Pro V1 has a Urethane cover while a Bridgestone e6+ has a Surlyn cover.
