With this specific shaft Cleveland suggests that the red shaft, with the mid/high flex point, be used by players who have faster swing speeds (generally around 100mph+). For these players, the flex point helps to keep the ball from being launched too high. The gold shaft, for slower swings speeds, will help to get the ball in the air because of the low flex point.

Not sure thats 100% true. I have a red shaft on my launcher 3 wood and golds on my driver and hybrids.

Red in for a lower 'tour' trajectory, gold is for a higher flight. Generally red will be better for stronger faster swingers, but is also for someone who hits the ball too high-my swing is 97mph but I hit a 3 wood very high-thats why I bought it.

ANd it works very well.

Shaft stifness is more strictly on swing speed. having said that if you have a problem with cutting it-dont get a stiff shaft.

Guess I really need to hit them both before I buy something. Just hate to make a 1-2 hour drive to hit a couple clubs.

My swing speed is also in the mid 90's. Most of the time I don't have any trouble getting my driver up but everything else is usually a line shot. Cutting the ball isn't a problem for me. My normal shot is nice draw. Every now and then it turns into a nasty snap hook that might go 75 yards. I currently have a stiff shaft in my driver and regular shafts in everything else.

That's what I was thinking but I'd still like to hit them before I spend $300 and find I got the wrong one.

$300+? Are you looking at the new Monster XLS? You could always buy a used XL with the Gold stiff shaft and see if you like it for about $60 as a cheap experiement. The XL is actually still a great club, I can't tell any improvement at all with the XLS (haven't hit the Monster yet).

FYI the gold shaft plays a little weak to flex.

    • I’d go with the Titleist if you liked the look of the blades but were suffering with distance. They should be a little more forgiving than a full blade and still retain some workability. Also remember to consider the shafts each have as this will be a big contributor to how they feel. Clemsonfan is right though… get fit or spend a bit of time on a launch monitor 🤙
    • Day 28: 2026.01.30 Managed to make time for a few swings out back today. Need a proper bit of range time this weekend.
    • Day 30, 1/30.  Six minutes this morning hitting a few more range balls, indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Did this before leaving the house.

    • Hi All my New Year’s resolution was to start playing golf again. I’ve caught the bug and am really enjoying hitting balls at a couple of my local ranges.looking forward to getting back out on courses in the spring. Based in the UK and 38 years old, I’ve been playing since I was a kid. Best handicap I’ve held is 2 in my mid 20s. Over the past 10 years I’ve played once or twice a year, sometimes with friends or for work. Could shoot 4-5 over, but just as easily shoot 15-20 over. I’ve moved to South Wales and am very lucky to be near some world class links courses, which gives me even more motivation to get playing again! I will start looking for a local coach in my area when I have more time to invest, but I recalled scouring this forum a few years ago and finding some good tips and advice so wanted to give it a try to see if there were any glaring issues I could fix in the meantime!  A few swings below… one from 1st week Jan and one from today. I have fixed my P1 takeaway to my liking and am now working on what I see as pretty severe early extension & hip thrust. Also terrible hip rotation. I’d like confirmation that this is indeed a problem and and suggestions on a few good drills. Thanks for reading 🙂 I've been Playing Golf for: 30+ years My current handicap index or average score is: 10ish over My typical ball flight is: mid The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: push right with irons, hooks and push with driver!  Videos:
