Alright, I've played golf since i was a teenager but have gotten a lot taller and need some new irons. Ive only ever had one set of clubs and they were 1.5 inches shorter than standard. Someone actually stole them out of the back of my truck but thats beside the point-- my issue is, I need new clubs.

1. I'm 6'1. Can i buy standard irons right off the stand or do i need to get fitted?

2. I love beating kids who buy the flashiest new sets of clubs and still suck. I want a set of irons that looks relatively simple and circa 1970 (but still sleek and sexy to the keen eye)--[Im the type of guy who will choose gucci sunglasses that dont even have the logo designed on them for others to see], but still plays well and forgives my sometimes less than perfect swing.
(at the moment im waiting for my scotty cameron circa 62 putter to come in the mail through ebay--if youre still wondering what style of clubs im looking for -- i also found this picture online http://www.worldwidegolfshops.com/Me...rca62no1XL.gif )

3. I dont mind if theyre new or used, as long as they work well and i dont spend more than 3-400 on them.

any ideas?? some of the ping irons are really catching my eye for this purpose, but im not down to spend a grand on fricken golf clubs

thanks in advance

PS. one more question. i know this is gonna sound hella noobish but what makes an iron set "good". ive never really researched the bs that all salesmen will put out there. why wont a "tinkertoy" set of irons or the dinosaur age irons everyone seems to have lingering in the back of their garage work as well 900 dollar clubs that look identical?

you can get a REALLY good used set of irons for $400. are you SURE you want something from the 70's though??? even something from the 80's or 90's would be a lil better i would think. there are tons of cool old sets though: Ping, Spalding/Top Flite, Wilson, etc... and as far as your question "what makes an iron set "good"" goes, i think the answer to that would be if you can hit them good, then they are good. are you looking for blades or what? cuz thats all that was really available in the 70's for the most part

ohhhh my bad, no i didnt mean i wanted something FROM the 70's

i meant i wanted a set that just looks retro, but with the technilogical advances the last 30 years have given us.

thanks again, jess

I'm 6'3 and I got fitted a couple of weeks ago. Turns out I need +1/2", so I'm guessing you'll need that or slighty less, maybe +1/4". I play ping and have played them for a few years, from the zings.

There's a review that someone has written for buying ping irons on ebay. He rates all the ping sets going back a number of years. As far as I remember he rated the ping eye2s as the best ping irons. Maybe see if you can get them on ebay with longer shafts.

I just bought some I10s and I'm delighted with them. I had some clubs to trade in and so was able to get the new, fitted clubs for $400 with trade in, pretty sweet.

If you like pings get pings if you want good used irons look for some good used Mizunos as far as fitting goes you can get fit and then buy club's off of e-bay but a fitting will cost you if you don't buy the clubs from the retailer in question, however you could buy the clubs if you dont hit them good say a little hook for example then you could buy some lie tape and that would at least tell you if you need to get them bent flat a couple of degrees, or vice versa, as far as length goes I would go at least 1/2 inch long as it's always cheaper to take alittle off and regrip than to reshaft and then regrip.

Mizuno is introducing new technology with their JPX One fairway woods and drivers. The new tech for golf but used tech for Mizuno since it is found in their baseball side of the business, is Nanoalloy. Nanoalloy is a microscopic polymer layer put on the face of their titanium driver. What this layer does is change the elasticity of the driver face and increases ball speed over a larger area of the clubface. Adding a bit more elasticity with this layer, they are conserving the golf balls energy from the impact.  Due to USGA rules, this technology falls under their coating regulations. Which add a correction factor to the ball speed testing done for conforming golf clubs. This rule was introduced when Taylormade went to their carbon clubface. Which I didn't know existed.  I am sure that center strikes are at the USGA limits like all other drivers. This has my interest. I am always, "window shopping", for new golf equipment 😉
