The Haney Project, Playing Lessons, Golf Fix etc. and golf tips in magazines make me nearly break out in a sweat every time I watch or read one now. That wasn't always the case. Last year I read a tip in a magazine about improving your -50 yard game. Not that I needed a lot of help (I was consistantly hitting an umbrella @ 40 yards) but I rushed out to my range to try this new "trick" out. Well then...I started hitting balls straight out in front of me, topping, shanking...I COULD NOT hit a half wedge shot to save my life. This plagued me for 2 months (and I was hitting everyday). Just because of that little "tip" I read about. I don't how it screwed my swing up but it did. It didn't mess with my full swing, just any swing 3/4 and under. I literally put my clubs away for 2 months and seriously decided to quit! But one day, for some reason, I picked my wedge up and went in the yard and it was like that little glitch wasn't ever there.

Now I am so afraid that I will see or do something that will mess me up that it literally makes me afraid to try different things. Case in point: I was on the course yesterday (shot a 84) and was trying to hook or slice the ball on demand. Then when the first time came I needed a straight shot I hooked it...bad. My stomach fell to my feet. I went straight to the range after finishing the round just to make sure I didn't screw something up!!

Do any of you have this paranoia?

I do want to add this....I haven't had a chance to talley my handicap since buying that new driver of mine but that thing is awesome. It is like a magic wand!!

- one more thing....I am just getting around to watching The Haney Project shows (I TIVO all the fore mentioned shows)....I have been wanting to watch them but I thought(and he does/did have one messed up swing) watching Sir Charles and that messed up swing, would mess me up or something....see what I mean..LOL -

Not at all, I have used many tips I've found online also. I agree that there are an overwhelming amount of tips around, but they won't go away, so it's up to each and everyone what they want to pick up and not.

Just because all the shops in my local mall have clearance sales doesn't mean I should go and buy something from all of them. Using a random tip you found to try out can work, or it won't work. I don't mind reading tips, but I don't go chasing them. I go the other way around, if I have a problem and want to work on it myself I seek tips online.

I've read and heard so many tips and fixes, they don't get to me as much as before. It's mostly a mental issue.

Exactly!! It is all mental. I dont mind trying new ideas...but since that time, if they dont work out...that is when I start fretting wondering if it is going to be the same thing all over again.

You have to know what you are looking for, filter through these stuff and sometimes you find something useful. I watched golfchannel the whole winter, and i would say i found about 4-5 things/drills that i decided might be useful for me in the new season.

General rule for me - if something sounds to complicated / not understandable in the first run, just forget it, not worth trying, since you dont want to stand over your ball and have to go through a checklist before hitting the ball.

Yup....the show comes on Golf Channel tonight at either 8:00pm or 9:00Pm EST. I'm looking forward to seeing some progress!!! No wonder he was caught driving drunk.....probably had a few drinks after his round to forget about the low flying uglies he was slapping around the course.

I had a teacher who thought that the golf channel was a godsend. Stop and think about that for a second. Yes, every lesson was an adventure with some days being spent learning the exact opposite of what I had learned the previous lesson. I'll stick with physics and kinesthesiology rather than have some tour pro guess.

If you are going to watch the golf channel think of it like it's American Idol when they are going from city to city: mostly terrible and not going to teach you how to sing. Just my two cents though.

I make a point of not thinking about swing mechanics while on the course. I just hit the ball.

Thinking about swing mechanics is fine when you are on the range, but when you are on the course your only focus should be on where you want the ball to go.

I like "The Fix" and I think it could be a really excellent show, perhaps the greatest golf instruction show of all time if they would just slow it down a bit and make the show 1 hour. I'm sure there's plenty of info that can be handled to fill up an hour and lets face it. Wouldn't we much rather have a hour of golf instruction rather than another one of those "Top 10" shows!

As far as Haney and Barkley,,,,,It's just TGC's version of E-TV!

As far as the "Quick Fixes" go, you have to know and understand what exactly you are trying to accomplish in your golf swing before you go plugging in any type of drill or band-aid. For myself, I have been working on one particular swing for the last 15 years which was based on Harvey Pennicks "Little Red Book". When I hear a tip or drill I evaluate it to determine if it has any value in helping me improve or maintain the swing that I am working to perfect. If it has no value then it goes into the garbage and I wouldn't be going to the range and trying it out just for fun.

Basically you have to know what your goals are in working on your swing and have the ability to evaluate tips and how they will effect those goals!

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
